The Pittsburgh Steelers host the Carolina Panthers in the final week of the preseason. Pittsburgh has their eyes on week one, but still have some questions that need answered. Here’s what to watch for in the preseason finale:
Jordan Berry has held the Steelers starting punter position for the last three years. Heading into year four he may just be in trouble. After last week’s game vs Tennessee, Coach Mike Tomlin said there is an open competition between Berry and Matt Wile. It’ll all come down to the last preseason game vs Carolina. Whoever out-punts the other will have a starting job come week one of the regular season. If Berry wants to win this battle, he’ll have to prove that his inconsistencies are in the past.
With lingering injuries throughout the preseason and training camp, rookie safety Marcus Allen is down to his final call for a roster spot this year. With not much to give him credit for in training camp, Allen is going to have to play out of his mind Thursday vs Carolina both on defense and on special teams. It would be disappointing to see him end up anywhere besides the 53 man, but right now the safety position for the Steelers is very competitive and very crowded.
Josua Dobbs will be the starter in this matchup, which tells us that either Tomlin is still evaluating Dobbs, or he wants to put more film out there for potential trade partners. It’s already been reported that the Steelers have put him on the trading block and will listen to any trade offers teams have for him. Unless QB Joshua Dobbs plays out if his mind, he will not be on the Steelers roster come week one. With Landry Jones backing up Big Ben, and Mason Rudolph pinned as the “Steelers future” its tough seeing Tomlin keeping four QB’s when only two dress on game day’s. Dobbs is 99% the odd man out here.
