Steelers Keeping an Eye on Free Agent Talent

by Steelbydesign

It’s been well over a month since the Steelers finished up the 2015 NFL draft, and added undrafted free agents. That does not mean that they aren’t still keeping a lookout for talent that could make their roster better than it currently is.

News emerged Monday morning that the Pittsburgh Steelers were one of ten teams to put in a waiver claim on the recently released Patriots tight end, Tim Wright.

I personally think Wright would make a nice backup TE/fullback hybrid and would be a welcomed addition to the Steelers offense.

However, I would have guessed the Steelers were happy with their starter Heath Miller, their blocking specialist Spaeth, their project in rookie Jesse James, and their long-shot in Rob Blanchflower.

Despite that depth, I’m happy to hear the Steelers are willing to bring in a guy like Wright, even if it means he’d possibly push a veteran they like out the door.

The same happened a few weeks ago when the Steelers also made a claim on former Texans safety DJ Swearinger.

Both of these guys (Wright and Swearinger) could’ve possibly put the Steelers in a situation that made them look bad. If Swearinger came into camp, and looked head and shoulders better than Shamarko Thomas… The story becomes that this guy that was just cut loose by the Texans is better than a guy who’s been developed in the Steelers system for 2 years.

That’s embarrassing for guys like Colbert and Tomlin, but if it makes the team better it’s something they should be doing. A lot of teams wouldn’t though.

I’d be willing to bet the Steelers have probably had some sort of contact with the former Eagles pro bowl guard, Evan Mathis.

Do I think he ends up in Pittsburgh? No.

Mathis left Philly over a contract dispute and the Steelers are already trying to figure out how to pay their own guys like Beachum and DeCastro next season. But the Steelers have shown a willingness to turn over rocks to possible make this team better.

I’d say there’s a good chance at least one player that makes the final roster this season isn’t currently even on the roster, and will be a cut during training camp from another team.

If they’re doing that, and putting pride and loyalty to veterans aside, it could eventually dividends for them eventually even if it hasn’t resulted in anything thus far.
