Steelers’ Jones Proves That Sometimes All It Takes is a Chance

For one day anyway, I’m sorry Landry Jones. I didn’t think you had that in you and I know I’m far from the only one eating crow right now.

After watching misfire on one throw after another while sprinkling in a few decent ones, there was just no way I thought you’d ever do what you did today.

This is just one game though and really it wasn’t even a full game so I’m not ready to anoint you the next all pro quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I mean, there were a few throws that left a lot to be desired but we need to celebrate the ones you did make.

Yes it helps that number 10 was back. I figured it would be Michael Vick who would thrive with Martavis Bryant back but instead it was you.

If we can take anything away from what you did today it’s that we can’t always judge talent by the individual alone. Every time we saw you in the preseason you really didn’t have the same weapons at your disposal that you did today. No offense to Shakim Phillips but he isn’t exactly Martavis Bryant or Antonio Brown.

You proved today that with better talent around you, you could succeed but you know what else I saw? You were prepared and you recognized things that I’m not so sure Michael Vick had at all. The Cards brought a huge blitz at you on a third a short and you hung in there and knew right where to go with the ball. Heath Miller was there and you found him.

That might be a small thing in the grand scheme of things but you did your job. I think you’d agree that you benefited from some pretty darn good “yards after the catch” today but there can’t be YAC unless you get the ball to the receivers right?

Honestly Landry, I hope next week you return to the bench. I don’t mean that to be cruel, I just prefer Ben Roethlisberger running the show. The good news though? You probably earned your way into the second string QB spot.

The better news? You proved a lot of us wrong if at least for today.
