The Steelers Break Out the Pads Today!

by Steeldad

While the skies were significantly better than the day before, the Pittsburgh Steelers still held practice on the football field at Greater Latrobe High School. The grass fields of St. Vincent’s College were given a reprieve in favor of the artificial surface at the high school. As for right now the team is expected back at St. Vincent’s and this time, the pads will be on!!

-If you are in dire need of a camp phenom after just two days it would have to be free agent wide receiver Justin Hunter. He has been making one great catch after another and has looked terrific doing so.

-Rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster sat out with an ankle issue. He was joined on the sidelines by fellow rookie Cam Sutton who had a lower body injury according to Mike Tomlin who deemed neither injury serious.

-James Conner looks as though he’s on the same type of plan the Steelers have had for Le’Veon Bell and Knile Davis. He’s noticeably lighter than he was when he played at Pitt last season.

-We must be cautious about trying to assume we know the depth chart especially after just two practices in pajamas. The inside linebacking corps is very thin depth-wise and that depth also lacks game experience. Whether it’s Tyler Matakevich, L.J. Fort or Steve Johnson, none of these guys can be considered “locks” for any number two spot. While it’s highly likely one will grab the spot it’s too early to assume who.

-Artie Burns and Antonio Brown continued their back and forth from Friday with both guys once again picking up good plays on each other. Brown obviously looks like his usual self but there is some serious excitement around Burns.

-Josh Dobbs has struggled in his first two days but just as we don’t want to rush to judgment on guys having good camps like Hunter we shouldn’t get down on Dobbs just yet either.

-Sounds like Martavis Bryant should be fully reinstated any day now but his case could be an example of how the NFL works with year-long suspensions going forward.

For those going to camp today have a great time!
