Steel City Blitz Quick Hitters for August 2nd, 2014

by Steeldad

The Steelers extended Shaun Suisham through 2018.

Following their night practice at Latrobe Memorial Stadium last night, the Steelers return to St. Vincent’s for a 255pmET practice today. As is my custom, here is the official steelers.com training camp guide.

-The Tribune-Review’s Mark Kaboly wrote a piece on Eric Waters who was Michael Sam’s roommate in college. It’s a very interesting view.

-In a somewhat surprising move, the Steelers extended kicker Shaun Suisham through 2018. I say surprising only because I think the Steelers need to explore kickers with bigger legs and well before 2018. Has he been consistent? Yes, but you need a guy who can nail 50+ yarders with more consistency.

-Somewhat overshadowed by the good play of Jordan Dangerfield has been the solid play of Shamarko Thomas and that’s good news for everyone because the expectations are high and who doesn’t root for this guy?

-The Steelers waived running back Alvester Alexander and brought in another running back named Jawan Jamison who was drafted in the seventh round last year by Washington. About the same height as Dri Archer, he weighs in just over 200lbs and was a 1,000 yard runner at Rutgers in 2012.

-Here are the fantastic observations of @ChrisG_BR from the night practice last night… anyone still thinking Martavis Bryant will compete for a starting spot clearly has not seen a practice… Four legit developmental prospects on DL. Can see why they haven’t re-signed Keisel. Live with the growing pains… McCullers gets reps in return wedge. Simply Stunning… False start. So many flags tonight…

-Make sure you give Chris a follow on Twitter. Very level-headed Steelers’ analysis and discussion.

-Friday night’s scrimmage featured a big fight that started with Le’Veon Bell and Vince Williams in ‘backs on backers.’ LeGarrette Blount, who was not in pads, stepped in to help Bell and then a scrum ensued. The media eats this stuff up but the fact of the matter is that this happens every day and in every camp in the NFL. Guys have pride and when they get beat like Bell did, they react. No big deal here, move on.

-I asked Scott Brown, the Steelers blogger for ESPN yesterday, about Mike Adams getting cut and some thought I was a bit crazy. Look, I understand that Adams was a second round pick and cutting him is an admission of making a bad draft pick but he is not performing. I’m hearing from more than one source that Adams getting cut is possible. Another player will need to really step up in the preseason for it to happen but don’t dismiss it.

-If you’ve never seen this before it’s a bit up close but worth less than two minutes. Myron Cope on the birth of the Terrible Towel.
