SCB Steelers Training Camp Tidbits: The Final Day

by Steeldad

Welcome to the new Steel City Blitz Steelers Training Camp Tidbits presented by Taps N’At! This is a brand new feature this year and every single day from now until the end of Camp you’ll see tidbits right here. Our goal is simple; provide you with everything we are seeing, hearing and learning from St. Vincent College in Latrobe.

Today was the final open practice for Steelers’ fans and it turned out to be rather eventful. Due to the weather the team was forced to move from St. Vincent College to Latrobe Memorial Stadium where the annual Friday night practice was recently held. More important than that however was Ben Roethlisberger going down.

During the “Seven Shots” drill, Roethlisberger went down in the pocket and lay on the ground face down for several moments. After a few minutes, he walked off the field under his own power and spoke with General Manager Kevin Colbert, Mike Tomlin and trainers. Preliminary thought was that he may have been struck in the head. According to the Trib’s Joe Rutter, Marcus Gilbert claims he was blocking and Ben ran into him and then went down. Ray Fittapaldo of the Post-Gazette claims Roethlisberger is in concussion protocol. My source is saying he’s fine. With his playing time for Thursday already being nil, he has plenty of time to recover regardless of severity.

On the injury front… Bud Dupree practiced today and is expected to play in Green Bay… T.J. Watt did not participate in team drills but did do some light work… Vance McDonald did not practice.

Mason Rudolph had a very good two-minute session connecting with JuJu Smith-Schuster with plenty of time left according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Our folks on the scene were quite impressed with Rudolph’s poise and overall demeanor during the drill.

With Roethlisberger already listed as ‘not playing’ by Tomlin on Thursday (Landry Jones isn’t playing either) many will view the game as a showdown of sorts between Rudolph and Josh Dobbs. Tomlin said he isn’t opposed to four QBs on the roster but I don’t buy that. There are too many needs on this roster to have that many QBs.

If there’s a competition worth watching at QB, then keep an eye on the linebackers as well. Ola Adeniyi seems to have the inside edge right now to follow Dupree, Watt and Anthony Chickillo. Keion Adams and Farrington Huguenin will have something to say about that though.

Today is our final ‘Training Camp Tidbits’ and I want to thank Taps N’At for their sponsorship! I’m very excited to have them sponsoring our WPIAL content this year too! you can do us a huge favor by getting over there and having a brew during the high school football season!
