SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “What’s Happening Rog?” Edition

Happy Hump Day Steelers’ Fans! Today’s title is an ode to those of us old enough to remember the terrific sit-com with Rerun, Dwayne and Roger called “What’s Happening.”

That isn’t the ‘Roger’ I’m talking about today though because NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will deliver his “State of the Game” address from Minneapolis. It is expected that he will address the “catch” rule which we Steelers are all too familiar with and he’ll likely address the NFL’s new social awareness program as well. There is no question the National Anthem controversy will be brought up too especially in light of a Super Bowl printed program ad that has been rejected. But this isn’t just an ordinary year though for Goodell. His power was challenged by Jerry Jones, TV ratings are down and most fans have ‘Patriots’ fatigue’ due to the persistent favoritism they are shown by officials. Goodell is not a total idiot despite our best efforts to prove otherwise. He will need to rely on his experience today because he’s going to be grilled and deservedly so.

The Steel City Blitz Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh will record this evening. We ran into a few issues last night but rest assured we are good to go tonight!

Tweet of the Day… I’ll address the reaction to this below.

I know there are fans who don’t like this. They look at it as an act of immaturity and I get that. Believe me I do because if anyone is the “Get off my lawn” guy around here it’s me. In this particular case though I see a young man having a little fun at the expense of a Patriots’ fan. I can handle this a lot more than I can guys smoking dope or driving around town while smoking dope. Let’s put it that way.

You’ve probably seen the trade that sent Alex Smith to Washington for a third-round draft pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller. Smith reportedly will agree to an extension on his current deal which has one year remaining. The new contract gives him $71 million GUARANTEED. Smith is 34 years old and this deal will give his rights to the Redskins for the next five seasons. This deal also means that Kirk Cousins will be playing elsewhere in 2018. Personally I think this is a win for Kansas City. They get a young, up and coming cornerback and they ship out a guy who just couldn’t get them past the first playoff game whether it was his fault or not. It also puts the ball squarely in the hands of Patrick Mahomes now and if Andy Reid feels he’s ready then I can’t disagree. That guaranteed money by the way will most certainly catch the attention of quarterbacks like Ben Roethlisberger and many others.

And yes, I still think the Steelers make a move on their defensive staff even though it’s been several days since the Pro Bowl ended.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
