SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Under Pressure” Edition

Good Wednesday to You Steelers’ Fans!

Those of you old enough will remember the classic “Is it safe to go back in the water?” line from Jaws. That is most applicable today when we ask the question “Are the Steelers safe from the drama this year?” Depending upon your personal viewpoint the answer very likely is no. Yesterday Antonio Brown aired his grievances to the Pittsburgh media yesterday saying he was “unhappy” lacked “freedom” and was under “pressure.” As I tweeted yesterday, I see both sides to what he said and you can read my entire take here, but the general consensus is that Brown has brought much of this on himself. One thing for sure, Ian sent me this yesterday and I thought you’d enjoy.

So now that you’ve had a good laugh, let me get serious for a moment. We as Steelers’ Fans have got to take a breath. I realize as I type this that I’m as much to blame as anyone but we focus way too much on things that don’t deserve the attention. We get way too caught up in the drama that I’ve come to realize isn’t really drama in most cases. I saw dozens of people who tweeted powerful, sensitive messages last week after the suicides of two high-profile people suddenly tweet the exact opposite when Antonio Brown clearly opened himself up. Brown hit on some really valid points yesterday, one of which dealt with the ridiculous focus on OTAs. Even Jerome Bettis chimed in yesterday saying “OTAs have gotten too publicized.”

This doesn’t mean I’m going to change anything here at SCB. I’ve never viewed us as a “breaking news” outlet anyway. All that I’m saying is that we all need to really adjust our thinking. Is every single thing that Ben Roethlisberger or anyone else says really that important and/or dramatic? Bottom line? We all need a chill pill at times.

Tweet of the Day… This was one of the best tweets in the post AB interview firestorm.

Quote of the Day… From Steelers’ Running Backs Coach James Saxon when asked about Le’Veon Bell. “We can only coach the people that we got here.” Nothing else needs to be said.

Two SCB Podcasts this week from our friends at 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. Tonight will focus on the Steelers while Thursday night will be our World Cup preview with predictions!

From Ray Fittapaldo’s chat over at post-gazette.com

mrbig: what changes to you see with the offense’s play-calling? More no huddle?
Ray Fittipaldo: Something to watch in training camp and the preseason games. I think all fans are wondering the same thing. I think Randy Fichtner would like to see this offense get better in short-yardage situations and in the red zone. But in terms of play-calling, it’s wait-and-see.

Ray is dead on here. This offense doesn’t need a major overhaul. But the areas he addressed have to improve.

Rookie linebacker Matthew Thomas continues to be a lightning rod of sorts. No question that he’s super athletic and would fit a spot of huge need for the Steelers but this is also a guy who has had his desire questioned. And has had some other issues as well. Let’s see how things shake out in Training Camp before we go too much further.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
