SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Time Heals” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

I hope another 24 hours has taken the sting out of Sunday’s loss. As they say “time heals” which I agree with but losses stick with me far longer than the wins do. Yeah, that’s definitely something I own because I don’t like it. Probably the old coach in me. This particular loss however bothers me a little more than others. The injuries are not something you can control no matter how much we want to so therefore it’s other things. I’m really tired of talking about the offensive line but that’s where you have to begin. Is Ben Roethlisberger playing well? No he isn’t. He can be better and he has acknowledged as much. But what more can he do? Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin have protected the 39-year old quarterback with five cardboard cutouts posed as linemen. Where is the aggressiveness and toughness we heard this new unit was going to have? Where is the nastiness and take no prisoners attitude? There’s no run game and the protection is inadequate. Did I miss anything? This unit has to be better and I fear it just isn’t going to.

Tweet of the day… Awful. Absolutely awful.

Not a Good Look

On the same day that Tomlin chose to punt on 4th and short down by nine in the fourth quarter, Ravens’ Coach John Harbaugh showed exactly the kind of guts Tomlin was lacking. With his team down a point to the Chiefs he asked his QB Lamar Jackson if he wanted to go for two. Jackson said “yes” and the rest is history. It can be explained to me any number of ways but there’s no way I can buy any explanation from Tomlin as to why he didn’t go for it Sunday. Yeah, I’m still bitter.

Tuesday…

Means that the players are off and Mike Tomlin is in front of the media. I expect the media to offer a few biting questions but I also understand why it’s hard for them. They already know Tomlin isn’t going to give them much.

Deciphering Ben

If you heard Ben Roethlisberger’s postgame comments on Sunday you probably picked up on a couple of things. First, he took a lot of responsibility stating “I have to play better” or some variation of that six or seven times. But he also was obvious in his dislike of Tomlin’s decision to punt in the fourth quarter and I’m pretty sure I caught wind of a slight towards Matt Canada as well. My gut tells me this; Canada is still not running his offense the way HE wants to run it. He’s staying with a lot of things from recent years to keep Big Ben comfortable. Whether that’s accurate or not I have no inside info to confirm but… None of this matters if the O-line doesn’t start playing better.
