SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Shazier’s Troubling Comments” Edition

Ryan Shazier - Steelers

Good day Steelers’ Fans.

Entering the game Sunday, Mike Tomlin stood at 6-4 coming off the bye week but he had lost his last three in a row. A fourth nearly happened but his team escaped on the final play of the game. As fans, we’ve been perplexed by the team’s lack of focus not just in games after the bye but also against inferior opponents. Enter Ryan Shazier whose comments are not generating nearly enough attention in my opinion. This was Shazier’s comment following the game. “Not going to lie, before the game some people even told me it almost didn’t feel like a game day.” Wait, what? You have 16 games a year. Is it too much to ask for the players to be prepared? At the NFL level, players should not need motivation from the coach. What they DO need however is preparation and game-planning. If that comment doesn’t speak volumes about Tomlin’s recent pattern than I don’t know what to tell you.

There are many Steelers’ fans who think we are “too negative” here at SCB. If being honest about what we see is being negative then we are what we are. Yes, this team is 7-2 but the offense is under-achieving significantly.

Tim Benz of Trib-Live took Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger to task over these comments following the win.  “The fans, the media, they should only care about the wins,” Roethlisberger said. “They’re not coaching us. They are the ones that should be happy that we won the game.” Trust me Ben, we are happy we won the game but Benz is absolutely correct that we have every right to criticize win or lose. After 14 seasons I’d think he would have figured that out.

Tweet of the Day… Maurkice Pouncey doing good things even on a short week.

T.J. Watt is due for some splash plays and I think they are coming. He has to be careful about committing to the inside too quickly as well. Teams are trying to take advantage of his aggressiveness.

With the Titans coming to town that also means Dick LeBeau returns as well. I have great respect for LeBeau and it will be good to see him with some of his former players. Note “some” means few. James Harrison, William Gay and Cam Heyward are about all that remains.

We’ll be recording the Steel City Blitz Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh tonight. Should have it posted late but early enough for the West Coast crowd.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
