SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “There Will Be Change” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend. I also hope that you had a moment to reflect on why we have this holiday. As for our Steelers, words like consistency and continuity have been a part of what they’ve done for 50 years now and despite a new man in charge as the General Manager, I do not see things changing much in the way the Steelers operate. That does not mean however that there won’t be change. New GM Omar Khan already suggested he’s going to implement some new things. What those are we don’t yet know. It is clear that Andy Weidl coming over from Philadelphia is more than just a “workplace signing.” Khan and Weidl have been friends for over 20 years and Khan made it perfectly clear that he’s happy to have Weidl joining him. I do feel for Brandon Hunt. At the very worst, it looked like he would have a position similar to what Weidl will have. I think it is only a matter of time before he’s with another team. He probably deserved better but this is a business after all. Danny Colbert, the son of outgoing Kevin, will be a senior scout and for all I know he’s very good at what he does. It’s hard not to recognize the nepotism however. Khan should not be judged on the results of this year or even the next. His evaluation will take a few years before we have true indication of well he is doing. With limited experience in player evaluation, how much of that will default to Mike Tomlin? Or will Andy Weidl be the guy to make personnel calls? Change in the Steelers’ organization does not happen often but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

Tweet of the Day… While I’m excited for it, let’s enjoy summer shall we? It’s been a long winter…

The Podcast (for those that missed it)

We recorded episode 271 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc this past Thursday. We discussed the new GM, the latest from OTA and much, much more on the Steelers. Audio or video versions available!

Tales From the Crypt(ic)

One of the things I really hate about social media (besides almost everything) is this penchant for “cryptic tweets.” For whatever reason, wide receivers in the NFL are very good at these. Diontae Johnson can add his name to the list. We already know he hasn’t been to OTAs yet and most of the speculation is that this is because he wants a new contract. I still believe they’ll get Minkah Fitzpatrick done first but I’ve been wrong before. Anyway, DJ has recently removed many Steelers’ related things from social media accounts which to me is the equivalent of a 10-year old taking his ball and going home when he doesn’t like how the game is going. I don’t understand the need to behave in this manner.

NOTE: Johnson has reported and is participating in OTA’s today.
