SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Super Bowl Hangover’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans and welcome to the Offseason.

Congrats to the Kansas City Chiefs on their Super Bowl victory last evening. Pretty sloppy and uneventful game for most of it but in the end it got pretty exciting. Kyle Shanahan has to feel a tad snake bit this morning. Three times now (twice as a HC and once as an OC for ATL) he’s had double-digit leads in Super Bowls only to lose each time. Can’t be a good feeling… We now head into the draft and free agent season with full force. Our first Mock Draft will be out this week and our Prospect Previews will be as well. Super Bowl hangover is real especially if you don’t watch a lot of basketball.

Cam Kudos

Congratulations one more time to Cam Heyward on his selection as the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. He was honored again yesterday prior to the start of the Super Bowl and did a terrific job in paying tribute to those who helped him get here.

The Latest Podcast

Just in case you missed it, the latest episode of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc is available! We discussed the recent additions of coaches Zach Azzanni and Tom Arth, what a Justin Fields trade would look like and we gave our Super Bowl predictions (I was right!)

Officiating

I think I speak for most fans when I say it’s always better to let the players settle things on the field. Last night in Las Vegas, the officials largely did that opting for very few calls especially in the second half. The crew last night took a page from the NHL. Late in series deciding games, refs often swallow the whistle. But, if there’s an egregious call that HAS to be made then typically there’s a “makeup” call coming. Such was the case last night when KC defensive back Trent McDuffie was flagged for in the fourth. Not long after that, the Niners were hit with a holding call that was borderline at best.

Officiating Take 2

In case you haven’t noticed in recent years, when the postseason begins the NFL has placed an NFL referee on the sidelines near the head coach for every postseason game. This is similar to what professional soccer does in that they have a center official who isn’t calling the game act as the ‘sideline official.’ He is positioned between the two managers and is there to answer questions, offer warnings over behavior, etc. I would really like to see the NFL institute this on a permanent basis. I think it would immediately make the overall product better and move games along as well.

Oh Javon

Have to feel for former Steelers’ defensive lineman Javon Hargrave this morning. He’s now played in two straight Super Bowls with the Eagles and 49ers and has lost both. He played well last night and recovered a fumble as well.

Halftime

I’m officially old. I needed my daughter to text me and tell me who some of the people coming out with Usher were. I knew Alicia Keys, Lil John and I think that’s it. Sucks getting old.
