SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Status of the Hawk” Edition

Good Monday to You Steelers’ Fans!

As you know, Steelers’ offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins went down with a severe leg injury last week in OTAs. The bad news is that his injury was a complete tear of his quad muscle but the tendon was intact. While this has to rank up there among the most painful things one can suffer from, there is the possibility that Hawkins could return in September. If the Steelers can survive the rest of OTAs, mini-camp and Training Camp without any severe injuries then perhaps Hawkins can be on the Physically Unable to Perform list and return after six weeks; or potentially go on injured reserve and return after week eight. Teams are permitted to designate two players per season for return from IR.
Unfortunately, the likelihood that they can remain injury-free is doubtful.

Today begins the third round of OTAs for the Steelers. This one will run through Thursday. Per Dale Lolley of Steelers Nation Radio, there will not be an OTA session today. There will instead be a team building activity.

Keep an eye on Jon Bostic, the Steelers’ biggest free agent signing of the offseason. There’s a good chance you could see him a lower weight than he normally plays at. The Steelers like speed on defense and that trend has been happening for several years now.

Tweet of the Day… Cool honor for former Steelers’ QB Charlie Batch.

I always look for lessons in sports that I think we can teach kids and the NBA Finals are offering some good opportunities. The amount of complaining being done to officials during the game is hurting Cleveland. I get it, the officiating sucks, but there’s little you can do about it. The Warriors are taking advantage of this by pushing the ball up court while Cavs’ players are still bickering at officials. What’s the lesson? Play the game and when there’s a break, talk to the official about why it was or wasn’t a foul. You only make it worse when you complain rather than get back on defense.

With the additions of Marcus Allen and Terrell Edmunds, two guys who’ve been lost in the shuffle are Cam Sutton and Brian Allen. Let’s be clear that I’m not making either out to be Rod Woodson or Tory Polamalu, that is borderline insane. What I’m saying is now that these guys have had a year under their belts perhaps it’s their time to shine in the secondary.

If you read my column regularly, you know I’m not a fan of Pro Football Focus. “Grading” players without knowing what their assignment was on each play makes zero sense to me. Another example was this week when they proclaimed that Artie Burns coverage was better in 2018 than in his rookie season the year before. How can they say this without knowing what his responsibility was on each play? I don’t get it. At the end of the day, I trust my eyes and my knowledge. You should do the same.

I find it very interesting that the Steelers have Cam Heyward listed as a defensive tackle right now….

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
