SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Signing Them Up” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans!

I have to admit that the one really nice thing about the relatively new rookie wage scale is that guys get signed under contract a heck of a lot faster than they did in the old days. There are some rare exceptions like Joey Bosa out in San Diego but for the most part, these deals are signed, sealed and delivered well ahead of Training Camp now. The Steelers had already signed fifth round selection Jaylen Samuels earlier this week and then added 7th rounder Joshua Frazier and their other fifth rounder Marcus Allen yesterday. The top four guys still remain unsigned but as I alluded to, this is much easier than it used to be.

ICYMI: The Steel City Blitz Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh was really good this week. Former LA Rams QB (And big Steelers’ fan) Jim Everett joined us to talk about QB dynamics between veteran and rookie players. It’s really good stuff.

Because you need to know… New numbers as of right now for rookies: Edmunds – 34, Washington – 13, Okorafor – 76, Allen – 27, Frazier – 69, Rudolph -2, Samuels – 38. They can always change once the final roster is set prior to the season starting.

Tweet of the Day… He may be a Chief now but we’ll still congratulate Rob Golden who graduated from the University of Arizona yesterday!

Rookie Mini-Camp begins today! These practices are all closed to the public but we’ll do our best to have our spies infiltrate and gain valuable insights into who is doing what!

I hear Kurt Warner wants to make a comeback at his advanced age. This is exactly why people shouldn’t have been ripping on Favre so much when he constantly waffled on retirement. For so many of these guys football is ALL that they know. It provides them with stability, a structured routine and plenty of money. Most of all, it gives them attention and my guess is that’s a big part of what Warner misses.

Lastly is the Matt Patricia story. He is now the Head Coach of the Detroit Lions after being in New England for over a decade. It was revealed this week that Patricia was once arrested and indicted for sexual assault in 1996. The case was dropped after the accuser decided she did not want to testify at trial. For the record, Patricia maintains his innocence and said he looked forward to proving that during the trial. Neither the Lions nor the Patriots were aware of this which I find very strange. The larger point is this; Patricia was actually arrested and indicted. He was put in cuffs and formally charged by a grand jury for this crime. Ben Roethlisberger was never arrested nor was he ever charged. Yet the Commissioner felt it necessary to “protect the shield” and suspend him. I’ll be very curious to see what, if anything, happens to Patricia.

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
