SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Should He Play Him?” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

I have to admit I didn’t think I’d ever find myself with this point of view. I’m pretty old school when it comes to football but I’m really second guessing myself. If you asked me whether or not Mike Tomlin should play his rookies in the preseason I would have looked at you like you were nuts. “Of course they should play!” I would likely bark. When it comes to Najee Harris, I have to say, I don’t think he should play that much. I won’t say “he shouldn’t play at all” simply because I know Tomlin will play him. But what is really to gain here? Possible arguments could be that he needs to work on his blitz pickups or that he needs to just flat out see game action. They are viable don’t get me wrong. But let’s look at it from the other side. If Harris plays on Thursday in Canton and gets hurt? I wouldn’t want to be Mike Tomlin. I repeat, there’s nothing to be gained here. Throw in the 17-game season and it’s an added layer of reasoning as to why he shouldn’t play. As I alluded to above, I know Harris will play but I sure as hell wouldn’t play him very much. And like I said, I never thought I’d have that opinion.

The Podcast

With the Hall of Fame Game being played the same time we usually record, we’ll be pushing back the broadcast. Right now I’d expect to do the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc on Saturday. One way or another we’ll be sure to get you our thoughts on what went down against the Cowboys.

Tweet of the Day… Pretty straightforward here.

Camp Rumblings

Mike Tomlin announced that Mason Rudolph would start Thursday night. He’ll be relieved by Dwayne Haskins at some point in the first half and then Josh Dobbs will see most of the action in the second half. There’s no longer any question that Haskins is now pushing for the backup job. I’m not ready to go there yet though. Game action will tell us a lot… Art Rooney II admitted they are trying to get a deal done with T.J. Watt before the season starts. I have to think it happens sooner rather than later. Either way I’m curious to see if Watt starts practicing next week as Tomlin stated he would… Is it a surprise that Cam Heyward has been involved in all of the post-play fights in Camp? It’s not to me. He’s a veteran. He knows how to push buttons and challenge younger players. As long as it stays to some pushing and shoving it’s fine…

Hall of Fame Game Preview

Ian threw together some key things for all of us to look for as the Steelers take on the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night.
