SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Rough Start” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

As I have said every single year, the period between the mandatory mini-camp and the start of Training Camp is easily the most difficult period of the year for NFL coaches and front office executives. As I type this, the Pittsburgh Steelers have nothing to be concerned about but the same cannot be said for other teams. Jaylen Twyman is a Minnesota Vikings rookie from Pitt. He was shot four times in Washington D.C. last weekend. Arizona Cardinals’ rookie first round pick Zaven Collins was arrested for reckless driving. Then there’s Kansas City Chiefs’ star Frank Clark who was arrested in California for felony possession of a firearm during a routine traffic stop (Is pulling over a Lambo really a routine traffic stop?). Police discovered an Uzi in an open duffel bag. Clark claims it belonged to his security detail. There’s an old saying that nothing good ever happens after midnight. I’m starting to think it should be “nothing good ever happens after mini-camp.” While this is certainly a rough start for many teams let us continue to hope the Steelers stay out of the news.

Carl Nassib

As many of you know, NFL player and current Las Vegas Raider Carl Nassib announced yesterday that he was gay. I first want to say that I look forward to the day when this is no longer a “breaking news” story but the real point here is this. The vast majority of NFL players and organizations do not care if you are gay or straight, black or white or are from Earth or Mars. If you can make plays and help the team win then that is the number one concern. I am not naive, I recognize there are people around the league who have views that do not agree with who Nassib is and that’s something that won’t ever go away. The point is simple, few people care if you can play.

Tweet of the Day… Our resident stat guru Ian added this to the tweet from Jae.

Default Answer?

I was at the doctor’s office yesterday for a routine visit and my doctor’s nurse, a Packers’ fan from Milwaukee, asked me what I thought the Steelers would do in 2021. Like when Ralphie blurted his pre-rehearsed line about the Red Rider BB Gun in “A Christmas Story,” I blurted out “Offensive Line. It’s all on the O-Line. If they play well, sky is the limit. If they don’t, it’s going to be a long year.” As I thought about that later, I wondered if that wasn’t just going to be my default answer this summer when I’m asked this. And I get asked this a lot simply because I have Steelers or SCB gear on literally all the time. I could have said something about Ben Roethlisberger or Najee Harris or depth issues on defense but I can’t help but come back to the O-Line. Do you feel that way too?
