SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Raise One for Bud” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers officially announced that linebacker Bud Dupree would not be tagged, it immediately meant that his time in the Steel City was over. Dupree’s story is one of interesting hills and valleys. A first round draft pick from Kentucky, the early reviews were mixed. Some looked at him as the next “Jarvis Jones” and that’s not good. But he worked his tail off and especially on the skills that it would take to become a top pass rusher in the NFL. When his contract expired after 2019 the Steelers franchised tagged him. It’s a one-year windfall for the player but also is a bit scary not having the security of a long-term deal. When Dupree went down, back in week 11 I think it was, you could immediately see that he was realizing the truth about the why players hate the tag. He knew he was seriously injured and for a guy essentially doing a 17-week job interview for potential buyers, this was an awful development. Despite this, I believe he’s still going to be paid handsomely. While I’m disappointed that he won’t be on the other side from T.J. Watt, I appreciate the effort and hard work Bud put in during his time here. Best wishes to him.

The Other Watt

The Steelers have restructured the contract of FB Derek Watt saving almost $900,000 against the cap. This will likely get the Steelers “Cap compliant” in time for the start of the 2021 League year which begins one week from today. This restructure also guarantees that Watt will be on the roster in the fall. Not that this was in doubt….

Tweet of the Day… This is a great idea and another reason why so many top players want to attend Clemson.

Allen

Marcus Allen, drafted as a safety but forced into duty as a linebacker last season, will be back with the Steelers. As an Exclusive Rights Free Agent the Steelers held the cards in this negotiation. I know some liked the flexibility of Allen last year but I’ll be honest, I don’t see it. To me, he’s a “tweener.” He’s caught between being to big and slow to play safety and he’s too small to play linebacker. Wonder if the Steelers don’t try bulking him up this offseason.

Pro Days

Today there are five schools hosting their annual Pro Days. Arkansas, Wisconsin, Marshall, Maryland and Northern Illinois. I expect the Steelers to have representatives at Wisconsin, Arkansas and Maryland for sure. The latter has been a hot bed for them of late. Derwin Gray, Anthony McFarland, Jr and Antoine Brooks, Jr have been recent picks from there. In Little Rock, Feleipe Franks could get some attention while in Madison the linemen are always of interest.

Happy Birthday

To my daughter today. She turns 21 years old which is freaking incredible. Where do the years go? If had any advice for all of you it’s to enjoy every moment. They go fast.
