SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Quiet Place” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

As the players filed out yesterday from the Southside Training Facility of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the quiet started to take hold. Eventually, the once busy and bustling room filled with football players was dead silent. With the exception of course of some laundry being collected but you get what I’m saying. While that space will indeed be quiet for several weeks there is a more important place that we all need to be as quiet as possible. That place is Steelers News. We are now entering the most undesired portion of the calendar year for coaches, agents and general managers. They loathe this period between the end of OTAs and the start of Training Camp because the only real headlines that are made by NFL players at this time are negative ones. Every day becomes an exercise in breathing deeply in the hopes that one of your players isn’t making headlines. Let’s hope this remains true for the Steelers. A quiet place this summer would be just fine.

The Podcast

After a week off the crew reassembled for another evening of opinions and info on the Steelers. And yes, there were beverages of the adult variety too. Check out the latest installment of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing.

The “Holdouts?”

We addressed this to open the Podcast last night but it bears repeating. T.J. Watt and Joe Haden were not at this week’s “Mandatory” mini-camp. We fully expect that Mike Tomlin or Kevin Colbert will make a comment soon about one or both being “excused.” In the case of Watt, his absence is about money and self-preservation. He’s more than deserving of the monstrous new deal that should be awaiting him. Therefore, why risk injuring himself in mini-camp? Our only concern is if this drags on through Training Camp. The Steelers could be thinking it would be better to do the deal in 2022 but I believe it gets done prior to the 2021 season kicking off. As for Haden, he’s likely looking at the release of Steven Nelson like “OK, so I’m your guy. How about one more contract?” While I don’t think that happens I am more inclined to believe he’s the one who will get the “excused” note from the teacher.

Summer Questions

While this next several weeks is usually very quiet that doesn’t mean the Steelers don’t have some questions. For example, with cap space around $7.3 million will they try to add depth at inside linebacker via free agency? Will there be a potential trade for one? Same question for cornerback depth as well… And here’s one that might be under the radar… If one of the two tackles aren’t getting the job done in Camp/Preseason could that trigger a potential move? The players might get to enjoy time away but not the front office!
