Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ Fans!
My Grandfather has been gone for almost 20 years now but the lessons and the words still resonate with me. Any time we watched a ball game be it football or baseball, he always talked about the “psychology” of the game. As a kid and teenager, I didn’t really grasp what he was quite getting at but now in my older years it makes much more sense. I think about the words of Ben Roethlisberger in recent years compared to his comments in recent months. There is no question that he understands his words carry weight. He’s the QB and everyone listens. From his “Maybe I don’t have it anymore” to his “play another three or four years” those comments have meaning. Whether they are shots at Todd Haley or messages to his receivers, there’s a certain psychological gist there. Perhaps the most important thing in all of this? We all need to stop jumping to conclusions.
Speaking of Haley… Big Ben isn’t the only one sending messages. Haley recently said his new Browns’ QB room was the best he’s been around. OK Todd. Have another tequila.

With all the talk of Morgan Burnett and Marcus Allen and Sean Davis and Terrell Edmunds and so on… Two guys that are way off the radar are Cam Sutton and Brian Allen. I am in no way suggesting that either will suddenly become all-pros. What I am saying is that sleeping on either would be a mistake. The Steelers like Allen’s length and athleticism and they like the football I.Q. of Sutton as well. The guys that don’t make the roster in this secondary are going to be very interesting.
We’ll talk a lot more about the decision to switch T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree as the season approaches but for now I can only trust the coaching staff. Clearly they saw a pattern of problems related to getting to the QB for Dupree and they feel the switch will help him. Watt is diverse enough to play anywhere honestly so I don’t see a major effect on him.
If you don’t think recruiting in college matters to NFL talent take the case of my alma mater Western Michigan. Prior to the arrival of head coach P.J. Fleck, the Broncos rarely had any representation in the NFL. Fleck was in Kalamazoo for four seasons and left for Minnesota following unbeaten season. Three of his recruits (Chuks Okorafor, Jarvion Franklin and Keion Adams) are now members of the Steelers and there are several others scattered around the NFL as well. Those are normally guys who would have gone to bigger schools but Fleck was able to get them to WMU and now into the NFL. Can’t overstate the power of recruiting.
