Good Thursday to you Steelers’ fans.
The NFL Owners are meeting today and the NFLPA is holding a conference call. They will be discussing the proposals set forth by the ownership as the current Collective Bargaining Agreement nears its’ end. Of note is a 17-game schedule, a three-game preseason and an increase of one team per conference in the postseason. The Players’ share would move up a percentage point or more depending upon what is agreed. That ‘one point’ by the way could mean as much as five billion dollars. So here are my thoughts on this… First, I’m OK with adding a 17th game and reducing the preseason IF they expand rosters and add a second BYE week. Second, I am NOT in favor of an added playoff berth. The great thing about the NFL is that it remains the only pro sport that doesn’t have a watered-down postseason. Under this format, the Steelers would have been in the playoffs. But ask yourself, would you really have expected much from a Duck Hodges led team in round one? We have to be realistic here. Last night, NYJ safety Jamal Adams tweeted out how exciting he found this offer only to be hit with a tweet from Richard Sherman saying “You need to call me.” Sherman is right to be concerned. The NFL constantly screams ‘player safety’ yet continues to want more physically from the players. I have no doubt the players will seek fairer marijuana rules among other health care additions. It would be absolutely terrific if the two sides come to an agreement before the season begins but I don’t see it as being quite as easy as others. The NFLPA has to get this as right as possible.

Cleveland Browns’ tackle Greg Robinson was stopped at the US-Mexico border with almost 160 pounds of marijuana. He is currently sitting in jail without bail. I will never understand how guys making millions of dollars will do something as stupid as this.
Agents of Change
Both Artie Burns and Bud Dupree have decided to switch agents. In Burns’ case, he is more than likely not going to return to Pittsburgh so I’ll focus on Dupree here. At 27, Dupree knows this is likely going to be his best chance at his biggest payday. I still contend that the Steelers will be unable to keep him but that doesn’t matter. Dupree gave himself this opportunity with his finest season in the final year of his contract. Kudos to him indeed but now starts the craziness. With T.J. Watt expected to get an even bigger payday I just can’t see the Steelers having so much money wrapped up in two defensive players. Regardless, Bud is likely to get some serious money during this free agent period.

The Steelers can have Bud Dupree and TJ Watt this year, and maybe next. If Bud signs a new contract, rather than be on the franchise tag, TJ will only count about 9M on a 5th year option in 2021. After that is when TJ will probably push Bud off the roster with his massive new contract, unless Ben is done a QB after 2021. Then we may have much more cap room with a rookie QB.
