SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “OTA Over and Out” Edition

Good Day to You Steelers’ Fans! And TGIF!

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ OTAs are overand now they have just the mandatory mini-camp coming up next week. Then it’s off for summer and the scariest period of the year for pro football players. I say that because that five to six week period before Training Camp begins is noted for being the most troublesome. This is where players blow off steam and relax prior to starting the long grind of the NFL season. Unfortunately that leads to guys making poor choices which then gets them in trouble. Let’s hope that period brings none of the nonsense to the Steelers this summer.

You’ve likely seen that Patriots’ wide receiver Julian Edelman is facing a four-game suspension for PED use. This idea that the Patriots are perfect is a fallacy. What will be just as interesting is whether Tom Brady’s training guru has anything to do with it.

Really good episode of the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh last night. Ben, Cnic and I looked at some of the major story lines of OTAs and discussed where the Steelers and Le’Veon Bell currently are as the July 15th deadline nears.

Tweet of the Day… Too funny.

Fans need to R-E-L-A-X… Ben Roethlisberger said this week that the other quarterbacks were “thanking him” for being on vacation. As is often the case, fans read the quote and then took it out of context. Roethlisberger was referring to the fact that they loved getting all of the extra reps. One of those three guys won’t be on the roster so the competition is hot and heavy. Too many fans thought it was a negative comment. I’ve got news for you; Ben isn’t going to stop talking. He’s a 15-year vet and he really doesn’t care what you think about his comments anyway.

From Uncle Gerry’s chat at post-gazette.com…

Linebacker Lounge – 3Rivers, MI: In your opinion can Matakevich win a starting spot? Thanks
Gerry Dulac: If so, they are in trouble

Totally agree here. The idea that the Steelers’ defense is better than it was in January is true because of secondary upgrades. The inside linebacker position however is below par. Matakevich is a good special teams’ player and reserve but he’s not a starter in the NFL.

If you’re a World Cup fan then check out Ian’s latest previews!

Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
