SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Not Having It” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

I talked about this prior to the Dallas game and the local Pittsburgh media has brought up once again… The dreaded “Trap Game” narrative is back but Mike Tomlin wasn’t having any of it on Tuesday. He told reporters that “this isn’t a Big Ten team playing a MAC school.” While Tomlin probably knows this, MAC schools have been pretty good against Big Ten schools in recent years this proving his point a bit. You can’t look past one opponent to another or you end up getting beat. In this case, it isn’t just that the Baltimore Ravens are on the horizon but they’re also coming in on a short week. That’s a pretty good reason to see the Jacksonville Jaguars as a Trap game now isn’t it? Tomlin’s larger point however is that in the NFL there no such games. You can’t afford to look past any team and any record. They learned this in Dallas and many guys on this team have learned it before. Should the Jags pull the upset on Sunday or won’t be because the Steelers were looking ahead, let’s make that perfectly clear.

The Podcast

We recorded episode 196 of the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc last night. Ben and I discussed the win over Cincinnati, the struggling running game and why the trip to Jacksonville will not be easy.

Tweet of the Day… If you aren’t old enough to remember this. Unreal. That’s Herm Edwards, former NYJ Coach scoring the TD.

On the Injury Front…

Injury Thoughts… I’m not real sure who the Steelers will see at QB for the Jags. Minshew could be ready by Sunday… Overall, Pittsburgh is fairly healthy. I’m hoping that illness Jayrone Elliott has is NOT Covid related.

Simple Take on the Running Game

It’s easy to get caught up in all of the technical mumbo-jumbo when it comes to why the Steelers aren’t running the ball well but when I watched the film something spoke to me. It said simply that some guys along the O-line just aren’t beating the man in front of them often enough. As it’s most simplest form, football is a battle of 11 men taking on 11 men. On every play the team that has the best numbers ultimately wins. The Steelers need more one-on-one wins. Period.
