SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Not Going Away” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans.

Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett was reinstated earlier this week following what amounted to a six-game suspension for trying to bludgeon Steelers’ QB Mason Rudolph with his own helmet. Whether any of us believe Garrett was punished long enough really isn’t the question because this episode is not going to go away. Garrett was interviewed by ESPN’s Mina Kimes this week and he again stated that Rudolph called him the “N-word” which, according to Garrett, is why he reacted the way he did. As far as I know, Garrett and Rudolph are the only ones who know the truth and he each is sticking to their story. One fascinating aspect of this is that Garrett suggested the NFL may have a recording of the incident. Whether he was told this, believes this or is just guessing I cannot say but if true then the NFL needs to release that. There are microphones all over the field and they are used in large part to pick up game audio on each and every play. Garrett’s continued assertion that Rudolph used the racial slur will likely add fuel to an already re-emerging rivalry. Our hope is that Rudolph doesn’t have to be on the field in any capacity so I hope the issue is dead but then again, I doubt it.

The Podcast

We recorded episode 165 of the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast on Wednesday night. We had three major topics to cover and those included Big Ben, the offensive line and our memories of Three Rivers Stadium. If nothing else, tune in for the memories because if you never had the chance to see a game at Three Rivers then boy did you miss an experience!

Tweet of the Day… The Steelers nailed it with these valentines.

Shearing the Beard

Brett Keisel held his tenth annual “Shear Da Beard” event to raise money for UPMC last night. Guest, ‘trimmers’ included Ben Roethlisberger, Ryan Shazier, James Harrison and Mike Tomlin. Kudos to Keisel for the money he continues to raise for children.

QB Carousel Growing?

Reports out of Detroit suggest that the Lions are shopping QB Matthew Stafford. If true, his name only adds to the biggest offseason ever of top quarterback movement. Stafford has always been a really talented guy but he’s never had a running game to speak of in the Motor City. I’d be curious to see what he can do with a different team.

Colbert on Ben

Steelers’ GM Kevin Colbert said yesterday that he “doesn’t think Ben is at the end of the road.” What I think is the most important thing that Colbert said however is this; “I am not going to comment on the specifics because that’s something we don’t discuss at this point, but we are comfortable at where he is in the rehab process,” Colbert said. “There is no reason to compare it (to other quarterbacks with a similar surgery) because if I have surgery and another person has surgery, the recovery will be different. We are just worried about where he is. We understand. He had right-arm surgery, and he is a right-handed quarterback, and he is going to have to throw with his right arm. You don’t know.” He’s exactly right. The isn’t one of us that knows where Roethlisberger is with his elbow and for any of us to even guess is to do so without any information.
