SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Hunter Returns” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans!

The Steelers announced the re-signing of wide receiver Justin Hunter. Like both Fitz Toussaint and Stevan Ridley, this is just a one year deal which clearly gives the Steelers the option to cut Hunter loose should someone else make the roster ahead of him. Currently, the Steelers have Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, Darrius Heyward-Bey and JuJu Smith-Schuster under contract to go with Hunter. Eli Rogers, who is recovering from an ACL tear, is not currently under contract but Mike Tomlin has gone on record as saying he’d like him back. If you look further, after the 2018 season, only Brown and JJSS remain signed. Bryant and DHB will both become free agents. This is why we are convinced the Steelers will draft a receiver in three weeks. What round? That’s hard to say but the once ‘wide receiver rich’ Steelers need to restock for the future.

As for Hunter, he’s a good, professional guy to have in your locker room. He also makes big plays in practice but struggled to do much during limited game action in 2017. He caught just four balls on 10 targets but did have a touchdown. Unlike DHB who is extremely important on special teams, Hunter doesn’t offer anything there. So if a young receiver comes in and contributes to special teams then Hunter’s days could be numbered.

Kicker Chris Boswell signed his restricted free agent tender yesterday according to his Instagram account. Had another team signed him, the Steelers would have been awarded a second round pick. This is obviously a tremendous bit of news. Bos has been terrific and as clutch as they come.

Tweet of the Day… What a fantastic picture.

Best wishes to William Gay who has signed with the New York Giants. My guess is they’ll use him as a safety but either way they are getting a good player and a great guy.

You may have noticed that Mike Mitchell is still available. This is likely due to a few things. First, the market for safeties is way down and Mitchell is looking for bigger money than he’s going to receive. Also, he probably wants a starting position and that isn’t going to happen unless injuries occur and they will eventually.

Been a lot of talk about Johnny Manziel’s comments about being drafted by the Browns. He made these on the “Dan Patrick Show” this week and to paraphrase, he basically blamed the Browns for drafting him. They knew he didn’t study film, was not the type to put in ‘extra time’ and was often more interested in partying. This is yet another cautionary tale for both Manziel and the Browns. I don’t need to go any further do I?

Have a terrific weekend Steeler Nation!
