Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.
The National Football League announced yesterday that the Combine, held every February in Indianapolis, will not happen as usual. Players will be evaluated in person at their respective ‘Pro Days.’ Typically, the Pro Day is another evaluation tool that is held after the Combine. It gives players who maybe didn’t perform all that well at the Combine a chance to redeem themselves. That won’t be the case this year. Also of note is the change in the interview process. Team officials, who would normally meet with players right in Indy, will conduct all personal interviews virtually. This will of course make the evaluation process of potential draft picks that much more difficult. Scouts and team personnel will have to rely much more on the tape than they already do. The interview process will obviously be different as well and it will eliminate the opportunity for officials to really gauge the prospect. Normally this process starts when the athlete walks into the room. Body language and overall demeanor are are immediately zeroed in on by team officials and now, with a player sitting in front of the camera, those things aren’t as easily identifiable. Sadly, we football junkies won’t get our fill of draft content this year.

Let’s Talk Watson
As is the case anytime a player appears to be available, fans of the Steelers immediately start screaming for the team to acquire said player. Such is true with Deshaun Watson. With it looking more and more likely that his time in Houston is done, there is no shortage of trade possibilities. What we have to understand is what it would take to actually land him. More than likely, the Steelers would have to part with a first rounder this year and next year. A second, third and fourth round picks would also be likely. I’m a “never say never” guy because I’ve seen a lot of things in life that I never saw happening yet they did. Was I surprised that the Steelers traded for Minkah Fitzpatrick? Damn right I was and that’s further proof of what I’m saying. Could Watson come to the Steelers? Sure he could but the price is too steep in my opinion and I really believe the team would like to reset its’ salary cap situation once Ben Roethlisberger leaves. Having a franchise QB on the roster is great but the contract sucks up a huge part of the cap.
Trash Talk
I’ve accepted that sports have changed a lot since I was a bigger participant and coach in them. What I still struggle to accept is the trash talking that goes on. Actually, the trash talk itself isn’t the problem. It’s what the trash talk devolves into. The Saints-Bucs game Sunday was a perfect example. Every single play guys were shoving each other and constantly getting up into each other’s faces. That’s not why I tune into to watch games and I thought professional leagues were doing better at cleaning it up. I was wrong. And if you’re wondering, I don’t like when the Steelers do it either. I’ve accepted it but I don’t like it.
