SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Cruelest Part of the Game” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

We knew it wasn’t good when we saw it. We knew it wasn’t good when we saw his face. And we knew it wasn’t good when he was carted to the locker room. Our worst fears were revealed yesterday when it was announced that Zach Banner has a torn ACL and is our for the season. Is Banner’s loss the worst that could happen to the Pittsburgh Steelers? No, I certainly do not believe so but his loss is a blow on a couple of different levels. Few players have endeared themselves to Steelers’ fans on social media the way Banner has. He’s honest, he’s funny and he’s caring. But he’s also a guy that literally worked his ass off to win the right tackle job. This is a man who was once over 400 pounds. All that time and work and effort was taken away just like that. This is why football is often the cruelest game in town. It does not discriminate. It does not care. When the injury bug comes, it gets you and doesn’t care how hard you worked. I’m hopeful that Banner returns next season and it’s going to take another huge effort.

Postgame Reactions

Ian and Derrick both added postgame reactions in the last 12 hours. Ian lays out the big performances and what they mean going forward while Derrick gives you a video breakdown of the Steelers’ Defense.

Team Moves

The Steelers have an opening on their Practice Squad after the Arizona Cardinals signed safety Curtis Riley to their active roster last evening. I would look for the Steelers to bring in a body today. Also, the Steelers DID NOT (as of this writing anyway) sign former fourth round pick Jerald Hawkins to the active roster. There were numerous reports yesterday that they had signed him off the Texans’ practice squad but as of now Hawkins remains in Houston.

Why Denver Scares Me

Everything and I mean EVERYTHING points to a Steelers’ victory in the home opener against the Broncos on Sunday. No Von Miller. Likely no Courtland Sutton and Phillip Lindsay is battling turf toe. A.J. Bouye has a separated shoulder and is very questionable to play. And the Broncos have to head East for a 1pm game and we know how those typically work out. Teams like this always worry me because a wounded team is a dangerous team. They are also 0-1 and are the only team in the AFC West that lost in week one. I think the Steelers win but it ain’t gonna be pretty.
