SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Cream Will Rise” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers’ Fans!

If you have ever spent a season playing football then you know there is a definitive point of separation between players and ‘great’ players. That separation almost always occurs on the first day of full contact. To be honest, it isn’t what it once was at any level from high school through the pros, but it still provides a clear line of who just who you can count on and who you can’t. In other words, when the hitting begins the cream always rises to the top. This is no different for the Steelers.

Mike Tomlin claims that none of the guys who currently have injury issues are thought to be serious. While that’s good news, there are concerns. Two tight ends are banged up and that position is already weak in terms of depth. Senquez Golson is also banged up and he’s a guy who can’t afford to miss time. His injury history will do him no favors.

Justin Hunter has been the “camp phenom” so far but keep in mind this fits his previous track record as a professional. He often starts out very well before declining rapidly as time goes on. With Martavis Bryant still not practicing and Sammie Coates on the PUP list, Hunter needs to prove he has staying power.

Tweet of the Day… This guy just doesn’t give up.

My overall take on Le’Veon Bell not being at camp is this… I understand why he isn’t there but at the same time he’s putting himself ahead of the team. Maybe that’s an ‘old school’ way of thinking in a sports’ world dominated by money but great teams don’t get that way be being divided. And make no mistake, this team has fractures whether it’s Big Ben and Bryant or Bell being dogged by a few teammates, there are issues that need to be resolved.

Depending on how bad the injuries are to Scott Orndoff and Xavier Grimble, I can easily see the Steelers going out and signing a free agent tight end. Right now they need bodies but if the injury issues persist into the preseason then perhaps a trade will be in order. This is a very weak spot for this team right now.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
