SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Big Opportunities” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ Fans!

Every preseason game is a chance for rookies, undrafted free agents and journeymen free agents to show what they can do. They’re going to get ample playing time while the established guys put on their bucket hats and watch from the sidelines. If you look across the Steelers’ depth chart and compare it with who isn’t likely to play tomorrow night in Philly you’ll see that wide receivers and outside linebackers have big opportunities. With Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster both out, that means Damoun Patterson, Markus Tucker and Trey Griffey among others are given the chance to prove they deserve to be on the roster. At OLB, T.J. Watt is out and Bud Dupree appears to be as well and even Keion Adams who has an undisclosed injury is questionable. Therefore, the Ola Adeniyi’s and Farrington Huguenin’s of the world have a chance to do great things. As always, it doesn’t matter how big the plays are that they make. The coaching staff is looking for a lot more than that. Keep in mind rookie Doran Grant once had a pick-six in a preseason game. He didn’t make the team. Opportunities are about consistency not just a play here or there.

In the coming days here at SCB we are going to be introducing a new discussion board. We are currently getting it ready and even when it finally shows up I’m sure there will be a bug or two to work out. Introducing this is our way of gaining more engagement with our readers. We hope you enjoy it.

Tweet of the Day… Can’t. Wait.

I have no problem admitting that I can be “get off my lawn” guy at times. There are things the younger generation does and says that infuriate me. But I also understand that every generation is different. What appeals to Baby Boomers may not appeal to Gen X’ers. With this in mind, a certain local media person is again targeting a young twenty-something player and is comparing him to Jack Lambert. “Would Lambert have tolerated him being ‘lit?’ he asks sheepishly. Apparently this local media person forgot that the 70’s teams also had personalities. From Frenchy Fuqua to Ernie Holmes, there were plenty of guys who didn’t live up to the ‘serious nature’ this media person suggests that all players should be. Like I said, I have my moments too but you can’t call out young men who are really no different than those who came before them.

The Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh will record tonight. We’ll discuss the latest from Camp and our expectations for tomorrow night’s game.

By the way, you can find the podcast at these outlets… Spreaker, Podbean, Google Play, iTunes.

I don’t normally watch ‘Hard Knocks’ but I did catch the first episode of the Browns last night and I couldn’t help but laugh at Todd Haley. He looks miserable and swears like a sailor. I found it enjoyable.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
