Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ fans.
As we get closer to the “official” start of summer and closer to NFL action, one term I think we may need to get used to is “abbreviated.” As a writer, it’s a good thing. It means I don’t have to type out full words all the time. Unfortunately for us, it could be applied to our Steelers. We have already been told that there is a real possibility that the preseason schedule could be shortened or, “abbreviated.” This is something most of us could get behind right? Most NFL fans already favor less preseason games especially since the teams continue to charge full ticket prices for them. Sadly, what none of us want to see is the regular season being “abbreviated.” By sheer coincidence of when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the other major sports leagues were already in action. Their seasons will be abbreviated or as it’s looking for baseball, non-existent altogether. So why would the NFL have to shorten its season? Read on to the next section.
Players Test Positive, What Now?
It was revealed this week that several players, including Dallas’ Star Ezekiel Elliott, tested positive for COVID-19. One other Cowboys’ player and four Houston Texans also tested positive. This is June. This is not a huge issue. But what happens if this is mid-October and a team has one or more players test positive? Do you cancel that team’s game? Are all games cancelled that week? You have to maintain competitive balance meaning you can’t have several teams playing only 13 or 14 games while other teams play a full 16. I’m going to assume the NFL is already having these discussions but the rest of us need to be prepared.

Claypool
My teenage son, who says very little to anyone older than he is because, well… he’s a teenager, asked me yesterday how much Chase Claypool would play this season. There’s no simple way to answer that. He has to prove he knows the offense first and foremost. Ben Roethlisberger won’t have confidence in him if he hasn’t grasped the offense. But Claypool also has to show he’s willing to block which he proved he could do in college. Position flexibility would be good too and oh yeah, catch the ball consistently too. I believe to start out we’ll see Claypool in certain packages where Big Ben can take advantage of his size and athleticism. The sky is the limit for this kid in my opinion.
Whoops
Last Friday I closed ‘Quick Hitters’ by wishing everyone a “Happy Father’s Day Weekend.” My sources have told me that this Sunday is actually Father’s Day. You can imagine my surprise when no one gave me gifts and didn’t make me breakfast Sunday. This pandemic has me really confused.
