SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Too Much Time on Their Hands?” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ Fans!

I must say I was a little surprised to learn that Head Coach Mike Tomlin gave his players the day off on Monday. After two straight hard-hitting and tension-filled divisional games, the move by Tomlin made sense to me. I assumed (we know what happens when we assume right?) that in exchange, the players would report on their normal day off which is today. Turns out I was wrong. The players will be off again today. While many of the players were in the facility yesterday getting necessary treatments and doing things on their own, the old coach in me struggles with this. You’ve got the biggest regular season game you’ve had in a long time coming, your defense gave up 38 points and you have been smoked by your opponent for the last decade but you give your team two days off? I realize the Patriots played on Monday night (they lost to Miami 27-20 by the way) but I’m not a fan of two straight days off. I hope by 8pm Sunday night I’m proven wrong and that the time off did the Steelers well. It’s just not something I would have expected this week.

NOTE: Today’s QH Title is in honor of Ben Anderson who loves Styx.

Coach Tomlin’s press conference will be at Noon Eastern today.

Can’t say enough about the scene following the game Sunday night. Between the face-time with Ryan Shazier to the players carrying off his jersey it was a very emotional moment and the culmination of a very difficult week for Shazier and everyone in the organization.

Tweet of the Day… My daughter is in her last year of Derek Jeter’s Mentoring Program so I know the power of organizations like what Charlie has created.

One thing I can tell you right now is do not base your expectations for Sunday on what we saw from the Pats last night. The NFL is a match-up driven league. The Dolphins used man-to-man coverage and got a steady pass rush, especially up the middle. The Patriots were also without Rob Gronkowski too. The good news is that I see plenty of opportunities for the Steelers’ offense against an improved New England defense. It’s a better unit than it was in the beginning of the season but it has weaknesses.

I really thought Vance McDonald’s arrival this season would be a huge addition to the offense and we got a real nice glimpse of what he can do on Sunday night but he again has been hit with the injury bug. I have no idea if he’ll be available or not Sunday but if he had to leave the game then I’m inclined to believe he won’t play.

If you know linebacker play at all then you know the Steelers struggled against the Ravens. I think Sean Spence will play much better now that he has his game legs again but they have to do a better job of getting into gaps and scraping to the outside. I would not be surprised at all to see the Patriots come in and try to establish the run immediately.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!

Styx not only sucks, they’re not even from Pittsburgh.
