SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Morning After Vol. 7” Edition

Another Happy Monday to you Steelers’ Fans!

What a terrific performance yesterday by the Steelers and most notably that defense which just seems to get better and better. Yes, they’ve had some ugly moments this season in Chicago and against Jacksonville but the Steelers aren’t 5-2 without them.

The reason I say that is because the offense is still not where it needs to be. Two impressive first half drives were overshadowed by short yardage ineptitude and red zone issues. If you’re fine kicking five field goals a game that’s great but it doesn’t sit well with me. You aren’t beating great teams doing that.

Not sure what else is left to say about Le’Veon Bell. He is just the epitome of a workhorse running back who gets better and better as the game goes on. His open-field stiff arm of Dre Kirkpatrick was one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time.

Could not be happier for William Gay this morning. He’s been on the sidelines most of the season and hasn’t said a word. He’s a total professional who is ready to answer the call when needed. He picked up his first interception of the season yesterday.

Have to feel good for Joe Haden too. He’s on a winning team for the first time as a pro and got his first pick as a Steeler yesterday.

Andy Dalton threw the ball away on a 4th and 3 with the team’s waning hopes on the line. Let that sink in.

Tweet of the Day… It has begun!

Let’s get to the elephant in the room… Martavis Bryant went on another social media rant following the game. His immaturity, which I detailed a year ago and was chided for, remains a huge problem for him. Why he has chosen to go after JuJu Smith-Schuster is beyond me. All that kid does is do exactly what Bryant should be doing. He works his ass off and plays every play like it’s last. If Bryant does like that then maybe some time without a helmet will do it. Then again he had a whole year without a helmet and that didn’t work.

The clock management fiasco at the end of the half did not come back to bite the Steelers but what a screw up that was. I believe the officials screwed Mike Tomlin. Why wouldn’t he have been calling for a timeout immediately after the play at :07? The officials have to have been prepared for that. Furthermore, the play call was atrocious. A hand off there was one thing but one that goes across the formation like that is a time killer.

The Steelers have now beaten the Bengals in eight of their last nine meetings.

Tweet of the Day #2… From me immediately following the fake punt.

Had that not worked, it would have given the Bengals great field position down just 12 points. Gutsy call but pulled off successfully by two great veteran special teamers in Rob Golden and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

David DeCastro is playing as well as he has in quite some time. That’s two straight games where has dominated.

Vontaze Burfict will be suspended in my opinion for his kick to the head of Roosevelt Nix. This guy isn’t a dirty player, he’s a dangerous person.

Speaking of Nix… Can someone, anyone, explain why you take him off the field on third and fourth and short situations when he’s been blowing open holes ALL GAME LONG?????? This is why Todd Haley is making me drink heavily on gamedays.

The Steelers have now beaten all three teams in the division including two on the road (CLE, BAL). While the remaining schedule has some tough games, there should be no way this team loses the division barring a major injury.

Enjoy the victory and on to Detroit! Have a great day Steeler Nation!
