SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Mandatory” Edition

Welcome to Tuesday Steelers’ Fans!

The Pittsburgh Steelers begin their mandatory mini-camp today at the practice facility. There are three significant contract issues that will be topics of conversation as the team meets for the final time before Training Camp begins in late July.

First up, Le’Veon Bell has been given the franchise tag which would pay him $12 million for this season should he sign it. His agent and the Steelers have not had meaningful talks since early March about a long-term deal and there is speculation that Bell may “hold out” when Training Camp begins.

Secondly is the issue regarding Alejandro Villanueva. As an Exclusive Rights Free Agent, he has very little leverage. Should he sign his sheet he’ll play for $615,000 in 2017 but he and his agent feel as a left tackle he is worth significantly more money and they would like a long-term deal as well. The bottom line for Big Al is that the Steelers don’t have to do anything quite frankly. He either plays for them or no one but I’m told they would like to get something done for Villanueva just not at the price his agent is asking.

Lastly is the situation with Stephon Tuitt which I’ll be writing about later today. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and wants to be paid like one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL. While he’s a valuable member of the Steelers’ D, will the front office get to him before the season starts?

Tweet of the Day… Kids demonstrating their AB twerking moves at his camp.

It sounds as though Bell will NOT be attending the mini-camp which tells me this is less about his offseason surgery and more about his current contract situation. What is the definition of “mandatory” anyway?

Pens’ Championship Parade is Wednesday. Not that you didn’t already know that.

Rookies Cam Sutton and T.J. Watt remain unsigned. I wouldn’t sweat this too much and I’d be stunned to see anything even remotely close to a Joey Bosa-like situation with either. UPDATE: Cam Sutton has signed this morning per Missi Matthews of steelers.com

Have a terrific Tuesday Steeler Nation!
