SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for June 17th 2015

The Steelers opened their mandatory three-day mini-camp yesterday and we saw some fireworks early on. Center Maurkice Pouncey and defensive end Clifton Geathers got into a skirmish during a team drill. Several offensive linemen jumped in to defend Pouncey which isn’t surprising. Personally I like the tempers flaring already. It sets a competitive tone heading into training camp.

The media continues to build up Darrius Heyward-Bey as a “leader” of the special teams and receiving units. I’m a huge believer in the importance of leadership on any team but Mike Tomlin can’t keep Heyward-Bey simply for that reason. He has not proven himself to be an effective receiver in my opinion and if one guy ahead of him goes down he’ll need to play more snaps on offense. Let’s hope the younger receivers step up.

QB Ben Roethlisberger said this week that it’s difficult to work on the running game “without pads on” and he’s absolutely right. You can work on the passing game all day long but the running game requires aggression and physicality to get it right.

Tweet of the Day from Le’Veon Bell at Mini-Camp

The Steelers will wear their throwback jerseys against the Bengals this season on Sunday, November 1st. Can we please move on to the next set of throwbacks?

A question on social media yesterday asked who was the most indispensable non-quarterback for the Steelers. I said Bell. Look no further than the last year’s playoff loss.

Have a great Wednesday and Go Steelers!
