SCB Steelers’ Draft Journal: Ejuan Price

by Chris Nicolaou

Ejuan Price, Pittsburgh Panthers

6’0”, 255lbs

RS Senior

EDGE Rusher

What’s to like: Successful with a variety of moves. Counter moves are productive. Never confused or lost, always has backup plans. Productive and aggressive in run defense. Has experience dropping into coverage. A pretty good athlete who moves his weight very well. Very quick-twitched. Smart in recognizing blocker’s weaknesses and exploiting them. High effort pass rusher who won’t give up when beaten, will wear down offensive tackles. Flashes strength. Great get off, will beat offensive tackles and get in the backfield quickly.

Concerns: Bit by the injury bug. Limited length which hinders him finishing plays. Motor and effort are in question, can give up if he determines a play out of reach. Seems like he sometimes is only interested in rushing the passer, looks uninterested in run plays not run directly at him. Conditioning may be an issue. Not a huge issue, but spent most time in 3-point stance, will be standing up in Pittsburgh. Not meant for goal line situations, tends to get taken out of the play by heavy sets.

Verdict: Lack of length will put him down on boards, but he is a dynamic pass rusher. Needs kicked in the rear by coaches for his lack of effort in the run game.   If the Steelers double dip at edge rusher, Price should most definitely have Pittsburgh’s interest. A local guy who won’t count against Steelers’ visits. Steelers will  get a good, hard look at him and get a solid evaluation. I can see him being a core special teamer and being brought into the rotation.

Stats: 48 tackles (33 solo), 19.5 TFL, 11.5 Sacks, 3 FF

Grade: 3-4 (combine will help determine which of the two)

Games Watched: UNC 2016, Virginia Tech 2016, Miami (FL) 2016
