SCB Steelers Quick Hitters for 1/25/16

by Steeldad

With the East-West Shrine Game in the books, we move on to the Reese’s Senior Bowl next Saturday in our search for prospective new Steelers.

A couple of guys I liked in the East-West game were Boston College defensive back Justin Simmons. He could play either safety or cornerback at the next level and has the type of athletic ranginess teams covet these days. Could be a decent mid to late round pick for the Steelers. Another was Michigan center Graham Glasgow. The former walk-on had such a good week he may have elevated himself to a first or second round pick. That might be too high for the Steelers to go with a center but I think he’d be a nice addition to back up Maurkice Pouncey.

The Steelers did the expected last week when they signed cornerback Ross Cockrell to a one-year deal. He was a guy they really liked in the draft a couple of years ago and when he didn’t the system in Buffalo he was released in the preseason. While he’s not exactly a shutdown guy, he fits what the Steelers like to do and with little depth signed right now it was a ‘must-make’ move.

Tweet of the Day… Too good to pass up.

Rob Rossi offers a solid take on the growth of Ben Roethlisberger in the leadership department. As always, some of the comments are hysterically ridiculous.

Last offseason Antonio Brown was pretty adamant about wanting a new deal even though he had three years left. His argument was that he had more than outplayed the good faith contract the Steelers signed him to when they could have given the money to Mike Wallace. After this past season, I find it harder and harder to not give him the deal he deserves. He’s had one of the greatest three-season stretches by any receiver in league history.

One of my bold predictions for the offseason was that Heath Miller would retire. Perhaps I’m wrong about that but if he doesn’t, I have to think a contract re-structure is coming.

Happy Monday Steelers Nation!
