Roethlisberger, Steelers Put the Nation at Ease

by Steeldad

Steelers President Art Rooney II and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger took to the podium today to announce a new deal for the two-time Super Bowl Champion.

As of right now, all we know is that the deal is for five years. Financial aspects of the contract should be out later. What can be expected is a deal with lots of guaranteed money and with the bulk of the money up front.

The deal ends what amounts to about 18 months of constant speculation about the future of Roethlisberger. It was back then that NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport reported that Roethlisberger wanted to be traded citing issues with offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Since that time, the speculation ran rampant about whether he would sign a new deal with the team. With so many lesser quarterbacks getting big paydays it seemed only logical that his time was coming.

Today was that time. His new contract puts the vast majority of Steelers’ fans at ease knowing their franchise quarterback will be around at least five more seasons.

There were many times I doubted that this thing would ever get done but in the end it did and frankly it’s all that matters.

Common sense tells us that this deal should now let the Steelers be more active in free agency but I don’t believe this has been a hindrance. The Steelers plan appears to have been all along to let the dust settle and then look for lower level free agents.

Neither Rooney nor Roethlisberger felt the deal would handicap the team from competing for titles as has happened with other clubs around the league. That’s good news because there are needs to be filled as you well know.

As Ice Cube so aptly put it, “Today was a good day.”

All right now I’m going to ask a question and I want everyone who comments on this site to be absolutely 100% honest with me. What is your overall thoughts on Ben Roethlisberger as QB and as a Man?
