Remember last season in Training Camp when the “no-huddle” offense was the flavor of the month? It was all anyone could talk about because we knew Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger thrived in no-huddle or two-minute offense situations.
When asked about Roethlisberger in those spots fullback Will Johnson said, “That’s when Ben calls what he likes to see and what he thinks works best in the situation.” (quote courtesy ESPN)
Let’s pump the brakes on the no-huddle though. For as much time as the Steelers put into it during their time in Latrobe last August, it didn’t exactly become a staple of the Todd Haley offense. I can’t criticize the numbers put up by the offense or Roethlisberger last season but for all of the success we had seen Roethlisberger have in the no-huddle the year previously we were left with a few brief glimpses of the no-huddle.
I’m not suggesting you won’t see the no-huddle offense at times in 2015 but for as much as you’re going to hear about it during Training Camp, don’t invest much into that news.
There is no question the emphasis on offense entering camp will be establishing the running game and becoming more efficient and effective in the red zone. With Le’Veon Bell likely gone for the first three games due to suspension, Haley must find something that works for DeAngelo Williams.
If Haley and Head Coach Mike Tomlin could take away anything from last season’s playoff loss to Baltimore it’s that without Bell more has to be put on the shoulders of Roethlisberger and a talented group of pass catchers.
But as for the no-huddle offense becoming more of a “thing” for the Steelers offense in 2015? Don’t hold your breath.
