WPIAL 2018 Week 8 Results and Playoff Clinchings

The WPIAL football season’s penultimate week saw a number of important results that impacted the playoff race. Here is an overview of tonight’s results along with some game notes on how those results impact the various playoff races. We will also have a number of CASKET MATCHES next week where the winner will go to the playoffs and the loser will go home to play basketball. Don’t forget to also check out our  WPIAL Standings Page and 5A & 1A Wild Card Standings Page to see where all of the teams stand in the race for the playoffs.

Class 6A Quad County Conference

Hempfield 31, Butler 14
The Spartans win the battle for last place between the two winless 6A teams.

Central Catholic 35, Canon-McMillan 7
Central Catholic clinches a spot in the playoffs as the Vikings will look to get back to Heinz Field for the 6th consecutive season.

Mt. Lebanon 34, Norwin 28
Mt. Lebanon held on as Norwin stage a big comeback late in the 4th quarter. The Blue Devils clinch their 5th straight playoff appearance and 10th in the last 11 years.

Pine-Richland 21, Seneca Valley 7
Pine-Richland clinches a first round bye in the 6A playoffs and will take on rivals North Allegheny for the Conference Title next week. Keep an eye on the student section Twitter accounts, there’s sure to be a TON of trash talk.

6A vs 5A Non-Conference

North Allegheny 26, West Allegheny 20
The game that generated so much controversy this week ends with North Allegheny staying undefeated. Both teams will have big games with the conference title on the line next week.

Class 5A Allegheny Eight Conference

Peters Twp 35, Bethel Park 0
Peters stays in the mix for the Allegheny Eight Conference Title with a shutout win over Bethel Park.

Upper St. Clair 38, Chartiers Valley 31
Upper St Clair built a comfortable lead then held on while Chartiers Valley stormed back in the 4th quarter. The Panthers run of close victories continues.

Woodland Hills 20, Moon 10
Woody High’s 22-year playoff streak is not dead yet as the Wolverines stay alive with a win over Moon.

Class 5A Big East Conference

Latrobe 48, Albert Gallatin 0
Latrobe clinches a playoff spot – their first postseason appearance since 2009.

Gateway 76, Connellsville 0
Gateway will face rival McKeesport for the Conference Title next week.

McKeesport 36, Franklin Regional 16
McKeesport runs past Franklin Regional to set up their fifth meeting with Gateway in the last three seasons, all of them producing classic results.

Class 5A Northern Conference

Armstrong 41, Fox Chapel 14
Armstrong’s playoff chances stay alive after beating Fox Chapel.

Mars 38, Kiski Area 0
Garrett Reinke scored three times on the ground and once through the air to lead Mars to victory and put them in position for a home playoff game. Kiski will need to beat Armstrong next week to make the playoffs.

North Hills 21, Shaler 7
North Hills will face Penn Hills for the Conference Title next week while Shaler will enter the final week of the season in a 3-way tie with Kiski and Armstrong for 4th place.

5A Non-Conference

Penn-Trafford 42, Hampton 6
The Warriors will play Franklin Regional next week with a home playoff game on the line.

Penn Hills 18, Baldwin 0
Penn Hills will play North Hills for the Northern Conference Title next week.

5A vs 4A Non-Conference

Belle Vernon 48, Plum 0
Belle Vernon lost their starting quarterback to an ACL injury last week but got a smooth non-conference game to work in a new starter.

Class 4A Big Eight Conference

Thomas Jefferson 70, Greensburg Salem 21
Thomas Jefferson will face rival West Mifflin next week with the Conference Title on the line while Greensburg Salem will face Indiana in a Casket Match for the final playoff spot. Greensburg Salem has not made the playoffs since 2011.

Indiana 41, Laurel Highlands 7
Indiana will try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014 with a Casket Match against Greensburg Salem next week.

West Mifflin 53, Ringgold 0
West Mifflin will face Thomas Jefferson for the Conference Title next week. Ringgold’s struggles continue with their 6th shutout loss of the season.

Class 4A Northwest Eight Conference

Beaver 33, Montour 20
Beaver clinches a playoff spot and will have a chance to get a home playoff game if they can beat Blackhawk next week.

New Castle 38, Highlands 14
Highlands is eliminated from playoff contention while New Castle is still alive via a 3-way tie scenario because of Montour’s loss.

South Fayette 55, Ambridge 0
South Fayette clinches their 7th straight Conference Title with a blowout win over Ambridge.

4A Non-Conference

Knoch 41, Trinity 14
Knoch is still mathematically alive to make the playoffs via a three-way tie with Montour an New Castle.

4A vs 3A Non-Conference

Blackhawk 35, Beaver Falls 15
Both of these teams will be in the playoffs in their respective classifications.

Class 3A Big East Conference

Derry Area 37, Deer Lakes 0
Derry is now an 8-point win over Burrell away from winning the conference title.

Elizabeth Forward 56, Uniontown 0
Elizabeth Forward has clinched a playoff spot and stays in the mix in the three-way tie at the top of the conference.

Freeport 41, Mt Pleasant 7
Freeport rebounds from an 0-3 start to win 5 straight games and clinch a playoff spot.

North Catholic 41, Yough 0
North Catholic pitches their third straight shutout to clinch a playoff spot.

Class 3A Tri-County West Conference

Central Valley 31, South Park 7
Central Valley bounces back from a slow start to the season to clinch a playoff spot for the 8th time in the school’s 9-year existence.

Aliquippa 59, Keystone Oaks, 0
The highest-scoring team in the WPIAL delivered once again. The Quips also have the WPIAL’s best defense and shut out the second-highest scoring team in 3A.

Quaker Valley 49, Hopewell 0
The defending State Champions will be back in the playoffs after clinching a spot tonight.

3A Non-Conference

Waynesburg Central 21, Burrell 20
Waynesburg gets their second win of the season as they hold on to beat Burrell with a scoreless 4th quarter.

Class 2A Allegheny Conference

Shady Side Academy 56, East Allegheny 21
Shady Side will play Avonworth for the Conference Title next week while East Allegheny will face Valley with a playoff spot on the line.

Steel Valley 48, Summit 0
Steel Valley is still mathematically in the mix for the conference title via a three-way tie if Avonworth beats Shady Side Academy next week.

Class 2A Interstate Conference

Frazier 30, Carmichaels 8
The Commodores victory sets up a Casket Match against Beth-Center next week.

Charleroi 57, Brownsville 0
Charleroi clinches the Conference Title with a win over Brownsville.

Washington 58, Southmoreland 35
For the second straight week, Washington fell behind in the first half but used an explosive second half to run away to victory.

Class 2A Midwestern Conference

Mohawk 14, Ellwood City 0
Mohawk clinches the Midwestern Conference Title with the win over Ellwood City.

New Brighton 42, Shenango 14
New Brighton clinches their first playoff appearance in the 6-classification era with a mercy rule victory over Shenango

Neshannock at Western Beaver
12:30pm Saturday

Class 2A Three Rivers Conference

Burgettstown 27, Brentwood 0
Burgettstown pitches their fourth shutout of the season as the Blue Devils clinch the Three Rivers Conference Title.

South Side Beaver 21, Fort Cherry 14
South Side Beaver clinches a playoff spot and a home playoff game with their victory.

Carlynton 21, South Allegheny 14
After a hot start, South Allegheny has lost 4 in a row and their playoff hopes are on life support. Carlynton gets their first conference win of the season.

Seton LaSalle 33, Serra Catholic 0
The Rebels playoff hopes aren’t dead yet as three teams will go to Week 9 with 3-3 conference records.

2A Non-Conference

Freedom 42, Apollo-Ridge 7

McGuffey 57, Avonworth 42
Two playoff teams and two of the top offenses in 2A squared off in a game that lived up to the hype as one of the best of the week. This could have seeding implications depending on how conference races shake out.

Riverside 43, Valley 6
Valley will have a Casket Match against East Allegheny next week.

2A vs 1A Non-Conference

Beth-Center at Imani Christian
1:30pm Saturday

Class 1A Big Seven Conference

Laurel 51, Sto-Rox 26
Laurel clinches 3rd place in the Big Seven Conference and will have to hope they can top Imani Christian in the Wild Card formula to make the playoffs. Sto-Rox is eliminated from playoff contention.

OLSH 48, Union 7
OLSH clinches the Big Seven Conference Title and a home playoff game.

Bishop Canevin at Northgate
12 noon Saturday

Class 1A Eastern Conference

Clairton 43, Springdale 7
The Bears stay undefeated to set up a showdown with Jeannette for the Conference Title next week.

Jeannette at Riverview
12 noon Saturday

Class 1A Tri-County South Conference

Avella 47, Mapletown 14
Avella beats Mapletown for the second time this season after the two teams faced off in Week 0.

West Greene 50 Jefferson-Morgan 7
West Greene clinches a playoff spot in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1992-1993.

California 56, Chartiers-Houston 0
The three-way tie scenario where first place is determined by coin flip is looking more and more likely in the Tri-County South as both California and West Greene cruised to victories.

1A Non-Conference

Greensburg Central Catholic 43, Cornell 8
It’s a shame only 8 teams make the 1A playoffs this year because GCC has been a nice bounce-back story after a few years at the bottom of the conference.

Leechburg 28, Bentworth 0
This game counted towards the 1A Wild Card Standings so it was a big result to help Imani Christian’s Gardner Points calculation.

Rochester 22, Monessen 14
Both of these teams should make the 1A playoffs so this game may have some seeding implications, depending on how the Tri-County South shakes out.
