Unlikely, But Steelers Should Be Active at the Trade Deadline

by Steeldad

At 4-4 the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves in a position to both be buyers and sellers prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline.

From the selling standpoint, I see no reason not to move cornerback Brandon Boykin. While he’s been a good special teams’ player it doesn’t take a genius to see he is way down on the depth chart and likely in Mike Tomlin’s doghouse. Why not try and recoup the lost draft pick given to Philly for a player who doesn’t see the field?

I guarantee you that there would be several interested parties who would love to add a good slot cornerback.

As far as the buying part goes, I would like to see the Steelers add some depth or even a new starter at left tackle. Alejandro Villanueva is an excellent story and obviously a guy we all should root for but I’m not confident he can protect Ben Roethlisberger consistently enough.

While I’m not certain what getting a starting left tackle would cost, I think the Steelers have to explore it. With Kelvin Beachum sidelined for some time with his ACL injury and the prospect of new contract, now seems to me to be a good time to upgrade.

Defensively, the Steelers could use upgrades on the defensive line and possibly at safety.

The Steelers’ coaches have clearly seen what we have in that Cam Thomas just isn’t a capable fill-in for Stephon Tuitt and as a depth player, he doesn’t add much either. Thomas was bumped from the starting line up Sunday in favor of Steve McLendon while Dan McCullers took over at the nose in the base defense.

Adding an extra body along the defensive front would be a welcome addition.

As far as safety, ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested today that the Steelers should trade a fourth-rounder for San Diego’s Eric Weddle. He pointed out what many of us know in that Tomlin is a big fan of Weddle. He also mentioned that Weddle has no plans to sign with San Diego following the season either.

I see the connection but Weddle hasn’t been healthy lately and the last thing the Steelers need is another banged up defensive back. Throw in the fact that Rob Golden has been pretty solid in place of Will Allen and I think the necessity of adding a guy like Weddle isn’t what it might have been.

While the Steelers making a deal by the deadline isn’t far-fetched it is unlikely. It also gives us something to talk about too doesn’t it?

Reportedly the Broncos offered the Browns a first round pick for Joe Thomas. If that’s the market rate for a left tackle, it’s not worth it.

getting a solid L.T. would really help.

Two number ones is pretty steep. That said, Thomas would be a “slight” upgrade. LoL
