The Injury Bug Finally Arrives at Steelers’ Training Camp

by Steeldad

They say there are only a few things in life that are guaranteed. One would be death, a second would be taxes and a third showed up today’s Steelers’ Training CampĀ in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

It was only a matter of time before the injury bug reared its’ ugly head at Steelers’ Training Camp and today was that day. The good news is that none of the injuries appear to be severe. The bad news is that many prominent players were impacted by these developments.

Shamarko Thomas (Shoulder), Jarvis Jones (Biceps) and Ryan Shazier (Back) were the big names from the defense to leave practice early. Offensively wasn’t as bad in terms of those who left practice early today (Josh Harris and Ross Scheuerman) but seeing Markus Wheaton limping and Martavis Bryant not practicing at all was a bit disheartening.

Update: Ross Jones of FOX Sports reports that Bryant will miss ten days with an elbow injury.

Injuries are just part of the deal when it comes to pro football and more specifically training camp, but the Steelers have to be a bit alarmed with the amount of guys who have gone done in just one week.

Ironically, the Steelers have stressed conditioning as a way to prevent injuries but apparently it hasn’t been enough so far in 2015.

If there’s any kind of silver lining in this for the Steelers it’s that guys who might not have had much of a chance to show what they can do now will. The injury to Shazier opens the door to Sean Spence who has been having a terrific camp so far. With Jarvis Jones dealing with an injury, that makes James Harrison’s presence that much more important.

The Steelers are used to this and Mike Tomlin won’t make any excuses but that doesn’t mean the injuries should be dismissed.
