SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Building Depth” Edition

Happy Hump Day Steelers’ Fans!

Over the last two days the Pittsburgh Steelers have done what they so often do in free agency and that is “add depth.” They’ve now added depth at running back, cornerback and with the signing of Tyson Alualu, a defensive lineman as well (They added receiver Justin Hunter last week too). These are not the flashy signings that so many Steelers’ fans desire each year but they are important nevertheless. I really like the addition of Alualu because I think he immediately makes everyone else on the D-Line better. Building depth is part of building great teams.

The Steelers obviously have work remaining however. As solid as they were in the draft last year they really need to hit home runs again with those top round picks.

Loved some of the ‘freak out’ reaction from Steelers’ fans over the fact that the Steelers had a representative (QB Coach Randy Fichtner I believe) at North Carolina’s Pro Day to see QB Mitch Tribusky. Look, some day Ben Roethlisberger will no longer be the quarterback of the Steelers. I don’t like it any more than you do but it’s called “life.” The Steelers were doing nothing more than ‘due diligence.’ Tribusky has tools that many like despite a lack of experience. If he fell in the draft considerably I could understand the Steelers looking at him. Just relax people.

Tweet of the Day…. Definitely something I would buy!

It’s now time for my “dumb comment in a beat writer’s chat session” portion of the article. Today’s effort comes from Uncle Ed.

KJ: Ed, would you say the signing of Knile Davis is more of a “look see” at him as the Steelers KR than being Le’Veon Bell’s back-up? He does, afterall, average over 26 yards per kick-off return…

Ed Bouchette: Kickoff returns no longer are that important. (Quote courtesy post-gazette.com)

Kickoff returns no longer are that important huh? What a ridiculous comment. Is this his effort to take heat off of the team for having a pathetic return game last year?

Lots of speculation about William Gay’s future in Pittsburgh. I speculated in my “Offseason Predictions” article that Gay would retire. While that doesn’t look true, the possibility of him moving on exists but I don’t see it happening until the Steelers are comfortable with what they have in the secondary. That… is easier said than done.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
