SCB Steelers’ Draft Journal: EDGE Tim Williams

The consensus is that the Pittsburgh Steelers are selecting an EDGE rusher at pick 30, and they might have a handful to choose from, or only a few.

Tim Williams #56

6’3″, 244bs

Senior

What’s to like: Very quick off the line, hard for offensive tackles to kick-slide quick enough. Gets in the backfield constantly. Wins both outside and inside. Short arm’d offensive lineman will have a tough day against him. Feisty and aggressive hand usage that is timed well. Has a decent first punch. Underrated against the run. Sets the edge and doesn’t get overwhelmed when he doesn’t win off the bat. Should draw a lot of holding penalties. Has above average bend.

Concerns: Thin, will need to put on some weight. Lacks arm and chest strength. Over runs the arc too much, creates a lane for the quarterback to step up into or run. Off field concerns, failed multiple drug tests at Alabama. According to NFL.com, Williams “struggled with Alabama scheme and needed things simplified.” Will struggle to win against athletic offensive tackles.

Verdict: A natural pass rusher who has a specialty of sacking the quarterback. May be asked to just go get the quarterback because of his lack of football IQ. Underrated against the run. Off-field concerns may push him way down some boards because of the Randy Gregory situation that is currently unfolding. Reminds me of Vic Beasley. The Steelers have enough issues with marijuana users. They should stay away from Williams, but they met with him at the NFL Combine.
