Steelers’ Training Camp Day One Notes

by Steeldad

Mike Tomlin must find a way to finish strong if the Steelers want to keep their wildcard spotYesterday was the opening of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Training Camp for the 2013 season and there was no shortage of stuff to discuss ranging from the strange to the sublime I suppose.

First, thanks to a bunch of journalists and scribes who put out a ton of good stuff. Those would include Mark Kaboly, Dale Lolley, Ed Bouchette, Alan Robinson and Chris from Bleacher Report.

*Projected starting left tackle Marcus Gilbert was able to complete his conditioning test today but was extremely gassed afterwards and had to be carted off the field. He was NOT injured.

*Projected starting right tackle Mike Adams was given full clearance to being practicing on Saturday. He of course has been recovering from stab wounds from an attempt by three men to steal his truck.

*Veteran defensive end Brett Keisel arrived to camp today in a dump truck. He was wearing a construction helmet and when asked why he said the team “was under construction.”

*Tight end Heath Miller was seen walking, without a limp and without a brace today in Latrobe. *Speaking of Miller, he is joined by fellow tight end David Johnson, linebacker Sean Spence and nose tackle Alameda Ta’Amu on the Physically Unable to Perform, or PUP List. Because they haven’t participated in drills yet, they are eligible to come off at any time.

*Mike Tomlin said that Ben Roethlisberger has some discomfort in his knee following surgery in June but that it should not be an issue in camp. My source (and don’t ask me who my source is because I’d have to kill you) tells me the knee is just fine. I’ll keep you posted if that changes.

*Perhaps the biggest news of the day is that Head Coach Mike Tomlin is now on Twitter. His handle is @CoachTomlin. Still scratching my head over this.

My Thoughts…

Only surprise on the PUP list was Ta’Amu who is battling a hamstring injury. I’m not sure how many lives this cat has but he has to be running out of them… I like Brett Keisel. He’s a good guy and has gotten a ton out of himself for being a seventh round pick over a decade ago. That said, enough with the various modes of transportation. Win a Super Bowl and you can drive whatever you’d like but not after an 8-8 season. It doesn’t look good… Roethlisberger and Miller went in through the back door today. What a concept… I can’t say I’m surprised by Gilbert’s Casey Hampton-like conditioning test today. Gilbert has ability but I’m just not sure about his toughness. The guy had all summer to be ready for this and had to be carted off the field. Yes, he completed the test but the image he leaves just doesn’t sit well with me.
