Steelers’ Rookies Outclassed on Monday Night

by Steeldad

JonesIf you wonder why fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers get frustrated when they see rookies perform for other teams while theirs do little then I give you Monday night.

While Le’Veon Bell will continue to be an unproven commodity, three other rookies saw significant time for the Steelers last night.

First-round pick Jarvis Jones started and inside backer Vince Williams and safety Shamarko Thomas both saw significant time. Wide receiver Markus Wheaton was again little used and why is beyond me.

Then there are the Bengals who had two rookies play significant roles in the team’s 20-10 win over the Steelers.

Running back Giovanni Bernard scored both Bengals’ touchdowns while rookie tight end Tyler Eifert made a splash play with a 61 yard reception that led to Bernard’s first score.

Granted, this is but one game and the jury is still out on Bell, but in terms of rookies making an impact last night, the Steelers’ rookies were limited while the Bengals’ flourished.

Frustration doesn’t even being to describe the feeling…Coach Gruden pointed out multiple times during the broadcast how Cincy used accommodated their talents at various locations. This is in stark contrast to the Steelers continually pounding square-pegs into the round holes. There are certainly issues with the capabilities of various personnel but its time to realize that you cant keep following an operating standard of “this is how we do it and even though our personnel arent a good fit, maybe they will change and perform”. Long season ahead Steeler Nation…pass the Tylenol…

I’ve heard the ‘square pegs, round holes’ analogy many times for this team in recent years and I am starting to think it fits. Gruden didn’t get nearly enough credit for the things he said Monday night because he spoke the truth and was very honest about why the Steelers are struggling.

Sorry, trailed off and didn’t complete my thoughts above. At some point the coaching staff must recognize that personnel talent will not satisfy the program’s design and some accommodation to the “program design” must be made.
