Steelers’ Practice Gets Chippy; Brown Gets Upset With Lack of Balls His Way

by Steeldad

The dog days of summer have set in on the practice fields of St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe. While that isn’t necessarily surprising, one of the combatants in today’s festivities was.

In a move that many Steelers’ beat writers could not recall seeing, Steelers’ Head Coach Mike Tomlin ordered first round draft pick Bud Dupree out of a drill after he went at it with essentially the entire offensive line. While many reports suggested that Dupree was kicked out of practice, that wasn’t the case.

He was however ordered out of the drill after first going at it with the Steelers’ Kelvin Beachum and then followed suit by going at it with everyone else. He was eventually ushered out by Cam Heyward and Lawrence Timmons. Even James Harrison was seen talking to Dupree after things settled down a bit.

The easy excuse here is that Dupree is like many guys in that they are tired of camp. They are ready to head back to Pittsburgh where they can sleep in their own beds and not be under the stringent rules of the coaching staff. While I can’t excuse that for a second, I think this was more about Dupree.

My gut tells me he’s frustrated and that he’s also been reading the newspaper clippings that have suggested he might not be living up to his first round draft status. I’m going to look at this positively. I hope this is the fire under his ass that it sounds like he has needed.

Brown’s Fit

About the same time that Wednesday afternoon wrestling was taking place, Steelers’ All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown was throwing what was deemed to be a “bit of a hissy fit” over not getting the ball.

Much like Dupree, we can boil this down to another guy who is ready to be done with camp so I’m not going to put too much into it. What I will say though is that this isn’t a good look for Brown. It’s common knowledge he wants a new deal and if the diva in him is coming out now, what happens in mid-season if his numbers aren’t on pace with last year’s?

Just a thought.
