Steelers’ Loss to the Chiefs Taking on More Importance

I do my best to not put the cart before the horse but in this case, I don’t think I can help it so I’d like to apologize to the horse in advance.

After this weekend’s slate of games, all 32 teams will have six games remaining. As of right now, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in pretty good shape for a playoff spot assuming they can close no worse than 4-2. While we won’t know for several weeks if it comes back to haunt the Steelers, the loss to Kansas City appears to loom large.

Way back when, the Steelers traveled to Kansas City to face a 1-5 Chiefs team. Ben Roethlisberger was still dealing with a knee injury but there were a few rumors floating that he could play. He did not and the Chiefs went on to win. They haven’t lost since and now stand at 5-5.

No big deal right? The Steelers are still a game up so what’s the big deal?

The big deal is that the Chiefs have the easiest schedule remaining over the last six games and they hold the top two tie-breakers over the Steelers. They own the head-to-head victory and they currently have an advantage in conference record. The Chiefs are 4-2 while the Steelers are 3-4.

Granted, the Chiefs have feasted on the Lions and the fading Chargers since beating the Steelers but they also went into Denver and beat the Broncos. I can’t argue the fact that this was also the game where Peyton Manning was given a seat on the bench but the Chiefs still had to deal with the league’s top defense and beat them.

The bottom line for the Steelers is quite simple; they need to take care of their own business and not rely on other teams for assistance. We’ve seen in recent years what happens when the Steelers put their fate in other’s hands. I’m hopeful that the Steelers will be able to look back on the loss to the Chiefs as no big deal but as Steelers’ fans, don’t we know it’s just never that easy?
