Steelers Find Slim Pickings in Free Agent Running Backs

by Steeldad

Beanie WellsIt was reported late yesterday that Chris “Beanie” Wells formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, would be in Pittsburgh today for a physical. Earlier this morning, Antonio Brown tweeted out that he’d love to have Ahmad Bradshaw on the team. Was this a sign the Steelers are interested?

I’ll be honest. Neither of these guys really thrills me that much. Both guys have injury issues and Wells fumbles the ball at a rate of 1 per 62.5 carries while Bradshaw turns it over once out of every 48.7 times he carries it. Compare that to Rashard Mendenhall who is now an Arizona Cardinal. For all the hatred of him for numerous reasons and his ‘fumble problems,’ Mendy turned it over once every 96 carries.

Both Wells and Bradshaw have solid qualities that would offer much in the way of helping the Steelers get some semblance of a running game together but Wells especially, struggles to stay healthy. He has missed 13 games over the last three season. Bradshaw has only played one full 16-game slate but has never missed more than four games in his six year career.

If you put a gun to my head I’d tell you to go with Bradshaw but I honestly feel just as good about drafting a running back in the middle rounds or finding a free agent back after the draft. Regardless, the Steelers running game isn’t going to turn around over night.

Where is LaRod Stephens Howling ,Mike Goodson or Justin Forsett? What’s the RFA on Joique Bell from Detroit? Detroit just signed Bush they might not match.

I actually like LSH a bit. Averaged about 3.6 YPC behind a horrible OL and best thing of all is that he does not have a fumble in 183 career attempts.

Not that it matters now, but Steven Jackson would have been the answer to our RB woes. We couldn’t afford him though
