Steelers Break From the Script in Win Over Atlanta

by Steeldad

It wasn’t supposed to be this way ya know? The game in Atlanta, Georgia was not meant to go like this for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I mean, this was the game where the entire fan base knew exactly what was going to happen.

This was that point once again in the season where the Steelers were coming off of a big win against a credible and respectable opponent in Cincinnati. We all knew what the script said didn’t we?

It was written on paper and all the Steelers needed to do was follow it. The Falcons were worst in the league against the pass. They were 23rd in the league against the run and their offense was missing its’ biggest weapon when it was announced that Julio Jones would not be playing.

But like a great actor who just goes with the flow rather than the script, the Steelers tossed the lines aside and went out on their own defeated a team they normally would have bowed too this season.

You’ve seen it haven’t you? A big win in Carolina followed by a horrible home loss to Tampa Bay. Then a big win over the Ravens followed by another terrible loss in New York to Michael Vick and the Jets. It didn’t stop there though…

The Steelers finally got a much-needed win in Nashville where they never play well and then headed on their bye week. Upon returning to action they were to face the New Orleans Saints who had lost three-straight games in a row all of which were at home.

Don’t let the 35-32 score fool you. The Steelers were badly beaten by the Saints and had once again proven that inconsistency was the number one name tag this team was wearing in 2014.

So there it was today – two nice drives ending in field goals – then the pick-six by William Gay. A 13-0 lead but we all knew it wasn’t comfortable didn’t we?

Credit the Falcons and their injury-ravaged offense for hanging tough as every time the Steelers went up double-digits they responded. Finally, at 27-20, the Steelers put the game away with the help of an illegal contact call and some great play-calling and execution.

This was a victory that broke the mold in this long season. It was a game we all expected to follow an all too unfamiliar script but these Steelers had other ideas today and I’m glad they did. I’m not sure any of us could have taken another re-run.
