Steel City Blitz Steelers Mock 3.0

by Steelbydesign

1. Owamagbe Odighizuwa, OLB, UCLA
I’m assuming that there’s an early run on linebackers and that Beasley, Ray, Fowler, Williams, and Dupree are off the board. That leaves Eli Harold and Owa as the most realistic pass rushers for the Steelers. I think that they’re seeking a big body to take the Woodley role on the strong side of the defense, and Owa fits that mold perfectly. I think that Kevin Johnson or Jalen Collins are in play but if the Steelers miss out on their pass rusher in the first, the value drops off significantly; whereas the cornerback position is much more talented in the second round. I’ve given plenty of reasons why Owa is a good fit in Pittsburgh earlier here.

2. Eric Rowe, CB/S, Utah
Rowe has more experience at safety than cornerback, and while he’s not one to shy away from contact he doesn’t always take the best angles as a safety. As a corner though, I think he’ll be just fine in that department. He’s not a great athlete but he’s long and plays the ball extremely well in the air. I see him as a cornerback first, but if down the road the team wanted to move him to safety, he could be a good complement to either Shamarko Thomas or Mike Mitchell who are more run support safeties, where Rowe is a good center fielder that can cover ground and ball hawk.

3. Clive Walford, TE, Miami
The Steelers have been showing a lot of attention to tight ends in this draft season. I think they like Jesse James out of Penn State, but if Walford’s there at this point he’s a much more polished player. Walford is a big bodied, all around tight end that probably should go in the 3rd, but may go higher because of a weak class at the position. Walford is solidly built and strong, so there’s potential to be a plus blocker (which he’s not bad already). He’s not going to blow you away with his athleticism but he does have some “sneaky speed” to beat linebackers down the seam. Walford is a bit of a poor man’s Heath, which makes sense since Heath was a 1st rounder and Walford will likely go much later.

4. Adrian Amos, S, Penn State
I think we’re going to see how confident the team is in Shamarko Thomas and/or Mike Mitchell in the draft this year. I think you’ve got to give them a chance for this season, but drafting a guy in the middle rounds just in case is probably a smart move. With two thumpers in Thomas and Mitchell, I think the team should seek a free safety. Amos fits that bill. If he’s going to be successful in the NFL he needs to stop gambling, but an underrated prospect.

5. Chaz Green, OT, Florida
Green has some injury issues, but he’s a guy that will be drafted late and probably make an NFL roster as a rookie. This is the make or break year for Mike Adams, and the team needs to bring in someone to challenge him. The team was lucky to remain pretty healthy along the O line last season, but they’re one injury away from being in some trouble in that area.

6. Darryl Roberts, CB, Marshall
Roberts wasn’t invited to the combine but had an impressive pro day. Roberts ran a 4.36 forty (would’ve tied for the second best time at the combine), a 39″ vertical (6th best), 6.66 3-cone (2nd), a 4.08 shuttle (11th), and did 23 bench reps (2nd). Keep in mind pro day times tend to be better than the combine, but the point is Roberts has impressive measurables. He has solid size at 5’11” 187 pounds. He could also be an option in the return game. The Steelers have brought him in for a visit, so the interest is there for this cornerback project.

6 (comp). Deontay Greenberry, WR, Houston
Greenberry was a 5 star recruit out of high school, and had a good career at Houston but was one of the bigger combine snubs. He didn’t run a great 40 which is why he’s available later, but he has a nice skill set and all around game. He’d be a nice gamble this late.

7. Travis Raciti, DE, San Jose State
Last season the Steelers’ practice squad was picked bare at the DE position with Nick Williams and Josh Mauro being signed elsewhere. A late round project will probably be picked somewhere.

Phew, Bob… I’m not crazy about this at all.

– I don’t hate the Clemmings pick, but really seems like a luxury with so many picks on defense.

– Kikaha is a Jarvis Jones clone to me. Medical red flags, small, not all that athletic. There’s no way he holds up against the run on the strong side.

– Olomu is a nice corner, but can the team afford to wait a whole year on him to develop?

– I’m a big fan of Grant, and had him in early mock iterations but I think he and Antwon Blake are very similar, do you need two undersized nickel corners?

After looking thru my first mock i decided to change several picks. Kikaha, i believe is underrated, Olomu would be a first rounder if he weren’t hurt. And if Cody Ross were 2 inches taller he would be consider a high draft choice. There is some risk in these picks but after researching this draft i feel these are some really solid picks.

I can understand why you feel that way, so let me explain to you what i i’m thinking. I think the T.J. gives us flexibility and turns an average group into a very good one in Munchak’s second year. Kihaha is very similar to Jones except he actually does have speeds and a burst plus 30+ sacks the last 2 years and he has only gotten better since his injury 2 years ago. Olomu was not going to play much anyways and we come away with the best CB in the draft.Grant he’s just a solid pick at this spot if he is there. Now this is a reach Armstead could be another steal great size and speed and he does have time to develop and spell Heath from time to time.Brown and Riggs will be available at these spots and i am just thinking B.P.A.

Chris I just don’t like some of your picks. I understand why you chose them but Odighizuwa come on he had 2 hip surgeries and the only way he can maintain himself is through proper exercise and there is not many NFL players that do that and to say he would best guy on the board is a flat out stretch. I guess now is a good time as any to show you and the rest of the people on this site my mock draft: Round 1-22:Alvin “Bud” Dupree, Round 2-56:Alex Carter, Round 3-87:Ifo-Ekpre Olomu, Round 4-121:Jeremy Langford, Round 5-160:Cedric Ogbuehi, Round 6-199:Zach Hodges, Round 6-212:Antwan Goodley, Round 7-239:Adam Snead
