Steel City Blitz Quick Hitters for August 11th, 2014

by Steeldad

The Steelers return to the practice field today after their day-off on Sunday. If you’re heading to Latrobe, here is the official training camp guide from steelers.com.

-Saturday night’s game broke a 13-13 tie in the all-time preseason record between the two teams.

-The last preseason meeting was last year in Pittsburgh and was won by the Giants 18-13.

-Steelers’ QB Coach Randy Fichtner and Giants’ LB Coach Jim Hermann were graduate assistants together at Michigan in the late 1980’s.

-I was somewhat surprised at the number of fans saying Ben Roethlisberger should have played longer Saturday night. These are the same people who would be screaming if he got hurt in a meaningless preseason game.

-I have to say, I’m not crazy about Martavis Bryant returning punts. He just doesn’t look comfortable back there.

-I’ve been very critical of the Landry Jones’ pick in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and I still am, but he played better Saturday night and was the victim of some dropped passes and then Bryant’s fumble which ended the game. Whether Jones ever makes it to the #2 QB in Pittsburgh is unknown but I thought he was a little better than people are giving him credit for.

-Look for my 53-man roster projection this week. I’ll do one after each preseason game.

-Here’s Dale Lolley’s take on the game from Saturday night. He writes for the Washington Observer-Reporter in SW Pennsylvania. Dale does a nice job on Steelers Nation Radio as well.
